Exclamation 7/8 July 2013 - SFO Travel Waiver and Impact to UA's Operations

Apparent aircraft emergency involving a 777 - details sparse, but aircraft on fire.

Evacuation chutes visible.

All runways closed, according to air traffic control audio.

Good luck and godspeed to all involved and at SFO.

Greg

Here are links to existing threads on this topic for additional discussion:

In viewing random UA flights into SFO, it looks like DEN, LAS, SMF, LAX, and SJC are among the UA stations handling some of the diversions.

I will "stick" this thread for the next 24 hours so that UA travelers may be alerted to the disruption of services at SFO related to this incident.

I will also join others in offering my prayers to those on the flight and their families and loved ones.

Question phone issues?

Is something going on? I have been on hold for 30 minutes, supposedly calling the "elite number"... and this is the third time today I have tried. The first two times I gave up after 15 minutes. What gives?

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg posted that she was originally supposed to be on this flight.

“We switched to United so we could use miles for my family’s tickets,” Sandberg wrote. “Our flight was scheduled to come in at the same time, but we were early and landed about 20 minutes before the crash.”

NOTAM closing SFO has now been cancelled, and ops will resume soon, but at a greatly reduced rate, like 15 per hour..
