Using EWR United Club showers on arrival

Using EWR United Club showers on arrival
I'm flying into EWR before connecting to SQ later during the evening. This are on separate tickets.
Can I use the showers at the United club on arrival? I'm *Gold and have a couple of United Club day passes.
What's also the best strategy with luggage? Since I'm on seperate tickets, I assume that I can only check my luggage to EWR on the first flight and then re-check them in for the SQ flight. Is it safe to have the bags just go through the carousel before being picked up by the luggage office?
