I just got the email from AA. All I can say is wow! Reminds me of UA's elite bonus program back some 7-8 years ago. Currently I split my travel between UA and AA. This just might be enough incentive to give AA an AAdvantage! That is unless UA competes. Only time will tell I guess.

I saw that on the FT front page. I have a feeling under this regime we will see NADA. My thanks from UA I guess was the privilege to spend 1 1/2 hours on the phone with MP getting 25,000 miles re-instated that went missing on a PAID same day change. Thanks Smisek, I feel the love.

pmUA used to have elite choice which is similar to AA's elite reward.
I believed most pmCO elites would not even know these benefits on pmUA and AA since pmCO
didn't have any similar program.
Since the merge, COdbaUA only show how much they want to push elites away and
cut benefits.
I believe COdbaUA encourage people to fly less so they won't be elites and they have to pay for all the fees.
Why do they want to waste money on those elites that they don't want?

I remember pmUA had elite choice until 2010.
I still remember the good old days....

As a pmCO elite in years past, I can attest to never having heard of such a marvellous program feature. Would LOVE to see something like this on UA, but can't say that I'm all that optimistic...

sfozrhfco Apr 23, 2013 4:22 pm

UA will match it in reverse. Reach the first level and UA will deduct 10,000 points from your account and make you pay for all checked bags. Those lucky enough to get to the last step will get charged twice as much for change fees, get to board last, and will have all the miles taken out of his/her account.

Get ready for the press release at 5PM on Friday.:D

Just to be clear, this is in addition to what AA elites receive at each level. So an EXP gets what 8 SWU's they can select to receive a gift of 2 additional SWUs?

yes.
pmUA used to have this program until 2010 as well.
pmCO didn't need to compete with any one at EWR/IAH/CLE so they had never introduced
any program to keep people flying more.

yes -- just as the PMUA Elite Choice program was pre-2010.
And each level is accumulative.

mgcsinc Apr 23, 2013 4:30 pm

Those are some awfully differently-valued rewards to choose from.

Jaimito Cartero Apr 23, 2013 4:31 pm

Looks like a good program. One choice at each level, plus your regular benefits. Being able to gift Plat is nice too.

joshwex90 Apr 23, 2013 4:32 pm

I wonder - could someone earn these benefits twice? Like an EXP that flies 300K, could he/she get 2 of the milestone 4 benefits?

Yes, PMUA used to have something similar, I think NW did as well. But, no, I have no reason to think that the "new" United will respond in any way. I have given up and gone away.

unavaca Apr 23, 2013 4:33 pm

On a somewhat tangential result -- I haven't been to AA's website in awhile. Kudos to their design team; the Elite Rewards page is clean, concise, and functional. Love it.

Darlox Apr 23, 2013 4:35 pm

All I can say is that I have a lovely Tiffany & Co glass bowl with "Delta SkyMiles" etched on the bottom, circa-2009, that I got as a loyalty gift. It didn't have much effect on my loyalty when everything hit the fan towards the tail end of the NW/DL merger...

AA is at least giving away something with travel viability, and their SWUs have some real value associated with them. I'm hugely surprised about the value discrepancy in the rewards... a SWU at 75k, versus 5 wi-fi passes??

But If I knew I could direct ~100k miles to them and get an extra 1-3 SWUs that could actually be used?? That's a pretty good deal. Could basically ensure that with the 8 you get an EXP, you'd almost never fly Y Int'l...

Sadly, most of my Int'l is Asia, so AA SWUs are about as useless as a helicopter ejector seat...
