How does UA expect to compete with 2-4-2 Business Class configurations for 777s?

Can anyone tell me how UA thinks that a configuration of 2-4-2 on a 777 can be considered Business Class. They tried to switch me off of ANA from BKK - NRT

when Dreamliner flight was cancelled to SEA and put me on a UA flight out of BKK with this configuration.

The configuration is 2-3-2 on my 777 flight NRT-SEA which I still don't think much of but it is a lot better then 2-4-2.

How does UA expect to compete with these kind of configurations.

I originally booked ANA Dreamliner because of staggered seating and lets face it far superior service.

Looks like if the Dreamliner stays out of service I will have to switch my business to DL with a far superior cabin of staggered seating.

How does UA expect to compete???

By the way all my Flights were UA code Share Flights

Please do. Sounds like DL has a superior product, and your leaving will make more room for us upgraders at UA.

I'll skip making a d-bag comment and say I agree fully with the OP about the 2-4-2 configuration. It feels incredibly cramped and I avoid it like the plague.

I actually don't think they're trying to compete...that's part of the problem

These cramped seats pre-date the merger and it doesn't look like there is any plan to continue fitting them to other aircraft types. The newly refitted 767-300s are being fitted with 2-1-2 seating that is much more spacious: http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Uni...767_300_ER.php

You will also find more roomy business class seating on the former CO 777s and 767-400ERs, so it may be worth looking at some of those flights in the future.

actually if I could chose between the 2-3-2 or 2-4-2 planes it would be the 2-4-2 Hands Down!

Why simple 2-3-2 plane is 55x20.5 for the Biz seat, the 2-4-2 plane is 77x23.PLUS the 2-3-2 are recliner seats (old planes with 2-5-2 in Y) while the 2-4-2 are Lie-flats

so your question should be how does UA expect to sell the 2-3-2 Biz class when its not lie-flats, smaller seat and no AVOD like the 2-4-2 has. The 2-4-2 are the new configs with 3-3-3- in Y

There's the PMCO 777s which are 2-2-2s.

I know they are still converting 777s into PMUA 2-4-2 format in C (IPTE) but I wonder what they will choose in the future.

They are not more spacious.

Perhaps the same way BA does?

So have I. Next time let people know it is an opinion and not fact.

That's a fact, agreed..

But there is a perception about 2-4-2 where it simply feels to me as though you're crammed in like sardines when sitting in the 4. And even in the 2 it just seems crowded. I've not flown in the 2-1-2 but my hunch is I'd far prefer that layout because it would *seem* less cramped and the cabin less crowded.

As one of my former bosses said, perception is reality :)

Let the OP know when those operate BKK-NRT-SEA.

BA has an advantage because their configuration takes into account that the foot area can be narrower than the body area. So their 2-4-2 configuration actually does not feel that cramped. Plus, it is much more private.

I would far rather be in that than a 2-3-2 where all the seats are right next to each other.

The amount of seats abreast in a particular cabin is not everything...

I agree. It looks bad and people look down on it but I love the seat. Its crazy how 2-4-2 is more spacious.

Thanks for that. I guess I don't understand how you can add an additional seat in a row and still come up with the seats being more spacious. If I look at the seatguru map it appears the rows do not line up which might explain but the united map which I was using shows the rows lined up. The daytime BKK-NRT flight is not conducive for me to sleep so lie flat is not particularly important but spaciousness is important.
