Cancel Seat Selection

I have a flight on Saturday and currently I have a seat assigned. Economy is booked full so I want to deselect the seat and chance an upgrade. (I know it is a very slim chance)

Is that possible?

JeffS Mar 7, 2013 4:47 am

I dont think this is possible, at least not without a call to UA. You'd also be chancing a middle seat. Unless your current seat is a middle seat I'd leave we'll enough alone.

FlyerTalker678 Mar 7, 2013 4:48 am

Ye I think I'll leave it alone and try and sweat talk at check in.

If economy is oversold will upgrading during checkin be cheaper or does it take that into account?

Are you talking about an upgrade to business or first, or an "upgrade" to economy plus?

If you're talking about business or first, this won't happen unless there are no elites entitled to upgrades left on the plane. If there are, they will get the F seat and you will get their seat.

Upgrade to BusinessFirst. I'm happy to use miles to upgrade or pay.

I have been upgraded foc before on the flight, so might give it a shot for the craic. Obviously it is unlikely.

It think it's vanishing unlikely that you'll get an op-up, there are generally a few no-shows which reduces the impact of oversales and I believe in op-up scenarios they'll give these to elites first (put GAs on this board may be able to put me right).

I'm presuming (as you mention BF) that its a non-CPU flight, but unless you see Z/ZN>0 on advanced view I wouldn't bet against others being waitlisted with instruments or miles.

If you unassign your seat, the best that happens is you're given the seat of someone who has been upgraded (potentially E+ but also potentially a middle seat with no recline).

If you seriously want to upgrade, log on to your itinerary now and see what the offer is. If you think it's worth it then take it, if not then wait til checkin but it may be higher, lower or the same; who knows.

Not being assigned a seat won't help your upgrade chances much.

FlyerTalker678 Mar 7, 2013 9:13 am

The current offer is far to much, €1,700 one way. I'll see at check-in what the costs are like and see if it is worth it. I'll take my chances at check as well, I know they are next to none but has worked before so might as well try it again!

Wouldn't elite status and fare class override those without a seat when it comes to upgrades to BusinessFirst? Last time i got my op-up to J, I had a seat assignment.

Short of convincing a friendly gate agent that it's one's birthday or honeymoon, this must be right. I got an op-up as a GM by asking once in 2005, but I think things have changed.

It is definitely harder to do now. Worked so much better when I was younger and had the cute factor. Now I'm 20 I find it harder to get the sympathy upgrade!

I just looked at my reservation and it has "A modification has been made to your itinerary please ring United Reservations to get it re-ticketed."

They have added a direct Aer Lingus Flight to the bottom of the reservation. I rang Aer Lingus and they said it is not confirmed. I rang United Reservations who said the airport did it and they are not sure why. They couldn't ticket it. Should I be worried/try to get it ticketed tonight or will it be grand tomorrow morning at the airport?

What was the routing and what is it now? You want to be sure Aer Lingus has ticketed that flight if its something you're relying on using to get to your destination.

Then returning MCO -> IAD -> DUB

These flights still show on the itinerary. But below it is
