I wouldn't call this insane. It certainly seems high, but whether or not it's a good deal depends on the ability to use the GPUs and the types of flights they are used for.

The pricing was based on both segments and miles - the price I quoted would have bought me 5 segments or 5,000 miles. I could have purchased a max of 15 PQS or 15k PQMs for $3,739.

Ouch! AA's $1199 for 5k miles/5 segments or $1799 for 10k/10 segments seems tame by comparison.

Only if you use them for flights you can confirm UG at purchase.

This was probably priced by the same guy who came up with the $799,599 buy-up offer for IAH-ANC: 2013-upsell-offers-business-first-ufc-pcu-questions-discussion-paid-upgrades

Can't use those GPUs

Agree. Extremely difficult using GPU's, specifically to Europe, less so to Asia.

I searched for 3 trips to Europe, and not on GPU available (all the way to december). But Asia was not a problem (mainland china, harder to Hong kong).

I had to throw away 3 GPUs last year, and I only used 2 for international travel. The other was used for a domestic flight.

Which is not as hard to do as so many say.........Depending on how you use GPU's, just one or two can be worth well over $2000

Look at difference between cheapest economy and cheapest business r/t on routes like USA-DXB, USA-Asia, USA-Brazil. Difference is much more then $2000 between say an S fare and a Z

Using them as I do (from D to ON) is worth more then $2000 on every route I can see. Granted, I would not buy full F on UA, since I have never and will never play the roulette game, If ON is not available id rather just buy F/A/P fares on SQ or F/A fares on LH but when ON is available (and it usually is), it can save a lot of money

But you can't use a GPU on an S fare internationally. So you have to deduct the amount it costs to buy up to a W fare to use the GPU.

Today I got an offer in the mail from United giving me the opportunity to buy my way back up to 1K status. In my mind the difference between Platinum and 1K is pretty minimal (dedicated 1K service line, complimentary upgrades 1 day earlier, 6 global premier upgrades and a few other small things) but I was curious to see what it would take.
I guess it depends. I was about 20% on CPUs as a Platinum. Thus far, I've been 100% as a 1K. That's a fairly substantial difference for me, but upgrade chances are highly dependent on your flight patterns.

I haven't had the opportunity to use a GPU yet (assuming upgrade space is available), but I expect international travel to ramp up this year.

I can't imagine the CPU success rate for Platinum is anywhere close to that of a 1K. Im also at 100% since the merger but I read A LOT of posts from many other 1K's who have dismal success rates. I have no idea why my success rate is so goos while other 1Ks are so bad but with so many 1K's complaining, it stands to reason to can only be worse for Platinums.

EDIT: Slightly on topic: the girlfriend was 1200 miles short of EXP last year, and AA made her an offer somewhere in the $1200 range. She got a letter last week saying that they're just going to give it to her instead. Thought that was interesting.

I wonder how the folks who bit the hook feel on that one??

Do you ever buy sub-W fares? If not, that's probably one reason why. Also depends what routes you fly.

I went 0 for 3 on LGA-ORD and vv last month, and that's with the Y cabin on all three flights being half full.

Pleasantly surprised

I was 1K for two years, last year was the first time in probably the past 10 years that I spent more time on the ground than in the air. A lot of it had to do with a freeze on all travel for work as well as less personal travel.

Logged into my account this morning for the first time since the end of last years program and was shocked to see that I was given a soft landing to Silver. Never received any offers, but there it was.

Silver is nowhere near 1K, Platinum, or Gold, but its something in the interim until I can get back up there. Maybe UA did value my business after all.

I'm seeing some improvements on CPUs, but at the same time have failed a GPU-supported, non-peak-time/day flight twice this winter. At least I got that GPU extended; it's currently once again waitlisted, this time for a redeye LAX-IAD on a Sunday night (so I don't have huge hopes for its success).

My Premier Silver fiancé just got a card in the mail and was offered 11,000 PQM/11 PQS to get to Premier Gold for $1849.

One of my clients missed 1K by 3700 EQM and his offer is 4,000 PQM/4 PQS for $1699.
