E+ removed for Silver on split PNR

I understand that a Silver with a current E+ seat assignment could lose it after a PNR is split for upgrades, but does anyone have recent experience with this actually happening? A colleague of mine is Silver and current holding an E+ seat assignment (it shows up on the reservation), but there still is a banner to purchase E+ for $88. I'm trying to understand whether he will lose that seat assignment at some point prior to travel (which happens to be next weekend).

They won't lose it, but they also won't be able to change to another E+ seat without paying. The only way they'd lose it is if there's an equip swap.

I had my wife bounce out of a confirmed E+ seat twice recently. Once in September after my CPU cleared and again last week after we check-in when the United Club reprinted my boarding pass from NZ stock to UA stock.

Generally if it happens it's pretty straightforward to get it fixed to call/go to the check-in desk and have them put back in the original seat.
