Received a schedule change email today for my SFO-RDU nonstop in December. Problem is, they changed me to SFO-IAD-RDU instead, and after some initial research, the IAD-RDU flight does not exist in UA's schedule or in other search engines.

What looks like a 1.5 hour layover in IAD could potentially be a 6 hour layover in reality, looking at published flights that were returned in the searches.

I know I need to call, with other options already in mind, but it's a bit baffling anyway.

Hmm. Ever is a long time...

As @docbert noted, we're probably going to be making a few stops now...

Talking UA now using a 737-800 on PVG-ORD

So I checked an upcoming flight and saw that UA appears to have substituted a 737-800 for a flight from PVG to ORD later in February.

From the upcoming flight status checker:

United Flight 836

City: Chicago, IL, US (ORD - O'Hare)
Gate: ****
Terminal:
Scheduled Time: 4:25 p.m.
Scheduled Date: Sat., Feb. 23, 2019
Estimated Time: 4:25 p.m.
Estimated Date: Sat., Feb. 23, 2019

Aircraft and weather Weather conditions: PVG, ORDAircraft Specifications:
  • Boeing 737-800
  • Capacity: 166 (16 United First®, 150 United Economy®)
  • Cruise speed: 530 mph
  • Propulsion: Two General Electric CFM56-7B26 high-bypass ratio turbofan engines, rated at 26,300 pounds thrust each

Now I hope I would be able to change my flight without any change fees.

You can find stuff like this most every weekend, when UA is updating the schedule.

I was once assigned a 20-seater Bus but the good news was that UA kept my Polaris Business seat.

There's also a number of 737-900's flying to Australia. It'll sort itself out in a day or two...

I get that these happen on the weekends and that they get cleared up. My question is still “why”? How does a 787 become a bus. Someone with fat fingers entering bad information into the system?

I saw a similar change when checking on my flight to Lisbon via Frankfurt in June. UA 182 going DEN-FRA on June 8 was changed from a 787-8 to a 737-800.

Flight opinion??

looking for your thoughts on ORD to DFW on 3/23, the 1pm flight. Thoughts on how coach is completely booked? Expected plane change? TIA

I don't think they're blocking inventory due to an expected plane change, as there's no mainline plane smaller than the A319, and it's unusual to change a flight from mainline to RJ a month prior to departure. I think it's more likely that they got a big tour group or something.

thanks for taking a look. Does it make sense that there are P and PN slots available if coach is sold out??

Yes. The PN space could actually be used by a passenger already on the flight in order to upgrade; the P space could be used by someone flying something like NRT-ORD-DFW.
