United: - turn your hotel nights into United miles promotion

https://secure.unitedmileageplus.com...les/terms.html

I got an email on this today. Looks like the Wyndham points that I bought during the promo earlier this year will transfer into even cheaper United miles! ^

I got the email too, but the transfer rates don't look too enticing, at least for Marriott, Hilton and SPG. I see there are bonuses too but not large enough to make it worthwhile. Am I not seeing some hidden opportunity?

The rates are brutal. Just use the points for hotel stays.

New promotion: 20 - 30% mileage bonus for hotel pt conversion

Received an email this morning:
Here's a fast, easy way to get closer to award travel on United: Earn up to 15,000 bonus award miles when you make points-to-miles transfers through November 30, 2012.
https://secure.unitedmileageplus.com...iles/conf.html

Conversions to 5k miles get a 1k mile bonus (20%)
Conversions to 10k miles get a 2.5k mile bonus (25%)
Conversions to 20k miles get a 5k mile bonus (25%)
Conversions to 50k miles get a 15k mile bonus (30%)

I'm not sure why they list bonuses for both 10k and 20k since the rate is the same

I was already planning to move over some HHonors points, so I'll take it . The conversion rate with the bonus goes from 10:1 to
8.33:1 (50,000 points)
8:1 (100,000 points)
~7.7:1 (500,000 points)

500K HH points nets you either 65,000 UA miles or a lot of nights at a Cat 7 Hilton.

Unless you have HH points coming out your ears and you stay at Hiltons so often that you never want to see the chain again, I find it hard to believe this bonus from UA mile conversion really is the best way to spend those points. You have to have a very high valuation of UA miles and a low valuation of Hilton to have this make sense. Given that you can get US miles that do much of the same thing for 1.1 cents per mile right now...

I would think the more interesting value play is Marriott travel package conversion- you'd get a 15K UA miles bonus. I also admit that a Wyndham conversion tempts me, since I got Wyndham points cheap during the last Discover America promo, in part because the conversion goes well under a cent per mile when there's any kind of hotel transfer bonus. PLus I have more Club Carlson than I know what to do with, thanks to their generous promos.

rates are terrible overall. the only good thing is the Wyndham one - sweetens the pot for all the Wyndham bonuses lately.

SPG--UA at 2:1?? thats crazy.

Thanks for pointing out the value in some other programs. Hilton is all I know.

I had been planning to turn 200k Hilton points and the Netflix signup into the missing miles to book a South Pacific award. Now I don't need to worry about Netflix.

IMO this isn't a great promotion for most hotel programs. Though Wyndham looks mighty tempting.

I wrote a short blog post laying out the details. link

While tempted to do a Marriott Travel Package with UA miles, it is caped at 15k points, not cumulative.

The UA hotel transfer rates all suck. They have for years.

Here's a bit more analysis on the transfer numbers from the hotel programs into UA:

Marriott:
20,000 Marriott Rewards -> 5,000 + 1,000
30,000 MR -> 10,000 + 2,500
70,000 MR -> 25,000 + 5,000
125,000 MR -> 50,000 + 15,000

Hilton:
10,000 HHonors -> 1,000 UA. To get the 15,000 bonus you’d have to convert 500,000 HH points resulting in 65K total points.

Starwood:
2 Starwood Preferred Guest -> 1 UA. To get the 15K bonus you’d have to convert 80,000 SPG points (I think that’s how the 5K bonus for 20K thing works) resulting in 65K total points. While probably the best deal you’ll get on SPG->UA anytime soon it still isn’t very good.

Priority Club:
30,000 PC -> 6,000 UA + 1,000
50,000 PC -> 10,000 UA + 2,500
52,000 PC -> 26,000 UA + 5,000
100,000 PC -> 50,000 UA + 15,000

125,000 PC -> 25,000 UA + 5,000
250,000 PC -> 50,000 UA + 15,000

Club Carlson:
8 CC -> 1 UA. To get the 15,000 bonus you’d have to convert 400,000 CC points resulting in 65K total points.

Hyatt:
50,000 Gold Passport -> 25,000 UA + 5,000
100,00o GP -> 50,000 UA + 15,000

Choice (I only listed the big and small; the middle ones are there, too):
25,000 Choice Privileges -> 5,000 UA + 1,000
250,00 Choice Privileges -> 50,000 UA + 15,000

Wyndham Rewards:
17.500 WR -> 7,000 + 1,000
30,000 WR -> 12,000 + 2,500
128,000 WR -> 51,200 + 15,000

From what I can tell this is not targeted?

And also, based on this rule "**All miles earned through points-to-miles transfers will be combined and applied toward bonus at conclusion of promotion" I'm guessing getting 19,800 from Wyndham and 250 from Club Carlson (for a total of 20,050) will earn the 5,000 bonus miles?

would be a much better deal if UA hadn't cheapo'd out of the SPG program... 2 SPG for 1.3 UA miles.. pathetic.

For Marriott, the standard conversion is: 125,000 points to 50,000 miles
But with the promo, looks like you'd get 65k miles for 125k Marriott Points.
Anyone done the math here yet and figure out if this is a good deal?
My guess is the answer will be "depends on how you redeem miles".
