To many of us, the CO interior already looks like an old, outdated one from the 1980s, even on newer planes

For a non-electric seat, year isn't terrible relevant. You can build an uncomfortable seat in the 2000s (ask PMCO they bought lots of them from Koito) or you could build a good seat in the 1980s.

An aluminum tube built in 2000 with an interior that uses darker fabrics and darker bulkheads and cabin walls isn't necessarily more attractive than an aluminum tube built in 1980 with lighter fabrics and lighter bulkheads and cabin walls. In fact, the darker fabrics make the tube seem smaller than it is. If anything, United should have gone with the sUA color scheme on the 787s, given how tight the Y cabin is.

Why do you continue to say this? It is not a downgrade. Better seat, better configuration. You still have a PTV not Avod, but everytime I fly a CO plane with avod it seems to always need a reboot.
767 is a great machine and the best configuration in Y. Also, IAH will enjoy a great 3 class service with better seats in ALL 3 cabins.
Congrats IAH.

I remember stepping onto my first sCO flight after the merger (which was my first CO metal flight in about a decade) and thinking, "Wow, this plane is dark and cramped!"
I can understand them not wanting to go with super-light fabrics in the seats and the walls due to those showing grime more readily, but the colors they went with are simply too dark!
Yes, the newer 737 interiors are better, I suppose, due to better lighting, but only marginally so.

How does the 763 J seat compare to pmCO 772 BF seat and what makes it better? I haven't flown a pmUA J flight yet, but I was happy with the comfort and IFE on the 772 seat.
