FAQs
Can I get both by status benefit and the credit card benefit?
No, the benefits do not stack. The best way to think about it is the first / second bag fees are waived, and you only have one "first" bag. Also addressed in above T&Cs.

If my ticket has a bag allowance doe the card benefit provide additional allowance?
No, the benefits do not stack. The best way to think about it is the first / second bag fees are waived, and if the ticket has no fee, the waiver provides no additional benefit, . Also addressed in above T&Cs

Will I get the checked-bag benefit on an UA issued award ticket if I pay the out-of-pocket costs (tax, TSA fee) with a qualifying Chase UA card?
Yes, assuming you meet the other requirements (cardholder's MP number is on the same PNR, etc.).

Is third bag fee at the original fee or charged at what was the first bag fee?
The higher bag fees are unchanged when first and/or second bag fees are waived.

Do Basic Economy fares change the bag waiver?
No - see Introducing Basic Economy
And MP branded Chase cardholders will be exempt from the BE carry-on & boarding group restrictions

If I am a Chase MP branded cardholder but used a different card to purchase the ticket, will I still get the bag waiver?
No
But some have found if you purchase E+ access with the Chase MP branded card, you will then received the bag waiver

If I cancel the card after booking but before travel, will I still get the waiver?
No, the T&Cs state the card must be active at the time of travel.

How do I get the checked bag fee waiver when checking in with a partner airline, such as a codeshare?
Checked bag fee waiver only applies when checking in with UA. Codeshare/partner airlines will not provide the checked bag waiver benefits based on being a primary cardholder of a Chase MP card.

What if I purchase the UA ticket on a third party site using the Chase MP card?
This is a YMMV situation. It depends on how the 3rd party handles its billings. Reports are the Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity ... bookings will received the bag allowance waiver at check-in.

What if I forgot to use the Chase MP card for the original purchase?
Certain additional items, such as E+ access seem to trigger the bag waiver.
Recent reports suggest this no longer works.

I have a new Chase MP card, how can I tell UA knows this?
This takes a week or two to be fully acknowledged in the system

Go to https://www.united.com/en/us/account
At the top look for "Mileage Balance" and just below that "Exp. xx/xx/xxxx" with a "?" in a circle. Click on the "?".
A popup should mention the being a MileagePlus CC holder and your miles will not expire. This signifies the MP account and CC have been properly linked.

Mileage Plus Branded Credit Card and Checked Baggage Fees

Normally don't check my bags but had to today. Thought since I had my chase card I could check one bag for free. Nope.. The agent said the tickets had to be purchased with the card, so pay up. Tried showing her the card, mine still says Continental, but no help, I did pay bag with the card..

Used to fly with Continental and loved it, but really not liking United. One would think having the card, plus flying on an M fare ticket they would waive the $25 fee but nope..

700 bucks to fly round trip from CMH to ORD, United then charges extra for a bag, and then just to insult me asks for $19 to get an E+ seat. Lucky for me at 592 miles per trip only 20 more flights till I'm silver!

My wife has United Explorer Chase Visa Credit Card.
One of the benefit is she and one companion can get 1 free checked baggage in Basic Economy.

What if we travel with 4 people in the same booking?
Will we get 2 free checked baggage?

Thank you!

Yes, you are entitled to two free checked bags. I have found the email receipt and the webpage baggage calculator to be unreliable when there are more than 2 people on the reservation. I believe the on-line check-in system does a better job of correctly calculating the baggage. Agents at the desk can also be unreliable. But United should reimburse you if you are improperly charged.

If the card was used to purchase the BE ticket, then the cardholder and 1 companion will get a free checked bag each. The others on the same PNR will not.

I bought a ticket with mileage and paid the fee with a non-united card.

If I get a United Card now, can I get a free checked bag?
Don't think so, but want to check with the experts.

No. You need to pay for the flight with the card to qualify for a free checked bag.

With the presently available MP cards, you will get Premier Access (just Premier Boarding (BG2) for Explorer card) and BG2 by just being a cardholder.

If you purchase E+ access with the card, you will then get the card's bag allowance.

Does premier access come with both the club and explorer cards, or just the club card?

Explorer card does get Premier Boarding (BG2) but not the Premier Checkin -- so partial

Is this correct?
I bought a ticket with my corporate Amex. I then bought E+ with my Explorer Visa. I still had to pay to check a bag (which I was expecting to do and thought was normal)

Others have reported this works but that was a while back. Are you the primary cardholder for that Explorer Visa?

Yes, I am the primary cardholder for the Explorer Visa. It was Sep 2018 flying IAD-DEN. Ticket purchased on corporate amex, and when I went to the kiosk in IAD it charged me to check a bag.

On more than a couple of occasions, this has worked for me. Once a Chase MP card became associated with the account, the bag fees went away. That said, it's not a guarantee by any means. .
Guess we need some more recent experiences to figure out the new norm

I should have plenty of chances to put it to the test this year. I have to use my corporate Amex to buy my UA tickets.

If I pay most with a voucher or gift card and part with my united card, will it still trigger the free baggage?
and is there any way to convince a phone rep to split two card payments for a family itinerary and still trigger free baggage for 2 pax?
