I have had a few flights arriving at or departing at D. Mostly the IAH 777, but also a ORD once. I think this has to do with the remodelling of the airport still. But yeah, its a crap-shoot whether you'll arrive or depart from D or G.
D gates are a lot closer to the Aspire lounge.
p.s. Ive had great success with getting luggage quickly when arriving at D gates. G always takes forever....

Only contract lounges (Aspire) @ AMS, not *A lounges. For non-invited (non-premium) customer, there is access for a fee $30, 25 euro).

Gates at AMS
I asked this question a while back but wanted to mention it again.
I am a frequent traveler to AMS. Sometimes UA flights use the G gates and sometimes the D gates. Not sure what determines which gates are used. Seems like lately, the D gates are more common.
Does anyone know what UA's position is at AMS? Why do they go back and forth between D & G?
The problem is that check-in and baggage claim are in T3, but the D gates are in T1. This makes for an incredibly long walk to the gate and from the gate to baggage claim. Also, the amount of time it takes for luggage to come out when arriving in D in ridiculous - arrive in T1 and luggage has to make its way to T3.
Thoughts?

Baggage transfer Amsterdam separate tickets
I'm connecting from IAH through Amsterdam on an award J ticket onward to Barcelona on a purchased Kim economy ticket. From my understanding interline baggage transfer is not allowed now on non alliance connections and I will have to collect my bags to recheck them. Is this correct ?
And would anybody know if 2 hours would be enough time in AMS to collect bags, go through ticketing, and go through security checks ? I have not traveled through AMS before.

Non-Schengen to Schengen transfer at AMS
I'm flying UA to AMS connecting to a TP flight to Lisbon (same ticket).
Obviously I'll have to go through passport control at AMS to enter the Schengen zone, but I was wondering whether I have to go through a security screening. I know passengers transferring from Schengen to non-Schengen do, but I'm not sure about the reverse.
Thanks.

Some airports in Europe sell plastic bags at the entrance to their security screening. I've seen this at LHR, but can't recall whether it was the case at AMS.

Does anyone know if there are any showers that can be utiilized upon arrival? The hotels at Schipol appear to be airside (not even sure they are in the same terminal), and since AMS is my final destination, I don't think I can use those. Unless my hotel lets me check in early, I will be wandering around Amsterdam for 6-7 hours before being able to check in...not the best look.

UA used to provide arrivals facilities at the Sheraton, but that is no more.
I consider a shower essential after a long-haul and will pay an extra night's hotel if necessary.
