BTW, if these fares are showing up only on routings to Hawaii, my sympathies for corporate travelers stuck receiving zero PQM are limited.

Seems clear to me that UA (and frankly other carriers) are moving towards status based on $ spend and away from miles/segments. The introduction of Y/B/M-UP just below CPU for GS is the best sign of this and clearly rewards the higher fare over the more frequent flyer.

That's a rational move and is entirely consistent with the business model.

I suspect its a reaction to increased competition to Hawaii, HA has increased capacity, Allegiant is starting Stockton - Honolulu soon for around the same price as the itin in the OP's post.

There's nothing new there - NW did it, and I believe CO has been doing it for a while as well.

And I don't have a problem with it - B fares are nearly discount F fares anyway; if UA wants to sell F seats to elites at a discount, that's their prerogative. You have the same opportunity to take advantage as anyone else.

Yes, this is a very basic way a reputable company should behave. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing any large airlines do it consistently. Everyone keeps adding fees, changing rules etc mid-year. At least UA is better than DL in this aspect.

I think that's what I said !

Higher fare paid gets you a better opportunity vs. merely flying a lot. Needless to say, flying a lot and paying hire fares gets you the top of the heap = GS.

I suspect that the issue here is that either the fare basis is incorrect (and not supposed to be 'N') or that the web site is incrrectly reporting 0%. There are numerous known cases where the percentage quoted by the web site is incorrect. I'd guess this is just another one of those.

This is not a new concept. For as long as I can remember, UA had EQM bonuses for B and higher fares. So, the idea that you could acquire miles and status with fewer, higher-yielding flights is well established and it's an option we've had for a long time. This N fare thing is just an extension of the same notion in the opposite direction.

Interesting how the CO apologists like to frame this as a case where UA was leaving money on the table and CO is now whipping them into shape with fiscal discipline when, in fact, UA always rewarded high value behavior and the change we're seeing now is an incentive for lower value behavior. Combine with TODs for kettles and merging of "all elites into one" and, in fact, all the changes I've seen from the CO regime are pushing UA down the value chain, not up the chain.

Before all this crap started, I'd sometimes make a choice to buy a B fare on a long international trip simply because I didn't want to fly more BIS miles to qualify for status and wanted to better SWU odds. Now, my biggest incentive is to walk away and take AA up on their Exp match.

Unlike DL, UA has always been very transparent on things like that and always provided advanced notice on any changes so i don't believe they would quietly sneak this in.

BTW a few years back i booked G-fare on ual site which was supposedly reserved for some unusual cases and not oped to public. Took quite a bit of time to force an upgrade on it and get miles credited. UA admitted a glitch back then.
