Update 30 Aug 2021
We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020. All electronic certificates due to expire prior to December 31, 2022, will be extended until December 31, 2022.

This policy change will automatically appear, but it may not be reflected everywhere right away. We’d appreciate your patience as we work to make that happen.
.
See discussion in COVID19 Schedule Change (6+hrs)/Cancellation Refund, UA resisting refunds, DOT ruling

Checking the balance: http://www.united.com/web/en-US/apps...s/default.aspx
Enter type (see below) and PIN as a single code without any spaces. Then the page will say it couldn't find anything and offer you a place to enter your last name. Note, will show remaining value but not expiration date,

What does "type" mean? Good question. See the following answer from post 670:

On the ETC , this is labeled as Promotion Code

There are other types but rarer

Electronic Travel Certificates (ETCs) / vouchers can only be used for travel on an entirely UA/UX operated paid itinerary.
Late August 2021 Now useable on partner and codeshare itins!
ETCs can now be used to pay pre-paid baggage fees.
Not valid when there are partner flights or any segment that uses partner metal.
Cannot be used to pay award flight fees.
Cannot be used for E+ fees, WiFi fees, UA subscriptions (Wifi, E+ fees, UC membership, ...), upgrades fees (but OK for up-fares), change fees, ....
ETC can be used by anyone with the PIN and last name of the original person receiving the ETC.
If not fully used the residual can be used later with the same original expiration.
ETCs will be used for the total amount needed (no partial payments if the ETC has a greater value)

TVCA certs with PINs (by far the most common ecert most customers will receive -- such as goodwill compensation from Customer Care or refunds on flights) are considered a form of payment and don't reduce the PQDs PQP earnings.. So the full value of the ticket is earned, no reduction

How do I use the ETC?
Online works fine or you can call and used an agent (a fee may apply)

Online, either select "all search" options and scroll to the bottom of the screen to enter
or
wait until you get to the Payment Options at the end of the purchasing steps and select "United payment types"
Enter pin code (7 or 10 digits) and Last Name on the ETC

Where online can I view my unused ETCs?
You cannot. No such listing is available. UA now displays some ETCs in Your Account (May 2020)
Reports suggest ETCs from flight credits seem to be displayed but customer service ETCs are not.
Now See All Your Electronic Travel Credit(s) (ETCs) on Your United.com Account!
You can call and ask an agent to look these up for you. Note agents will not provide the ETC PIN on the phone.

Can an ETC be used for covering the costs of a post-purchase upfare?
Multiple reports of success but one mentioned it would need to be the sole method of payment.
Can only be done by an agent -- not online
Can not be an upgrade fee, must be an upfare.

Can an ETC be used to UC membership or E+ access fee or change fee or award fee or upgrade co-pay or baggage fee or ...
ETCs can only be used for airfare, not for any fee
August 2020 - ETCs can be used for internet access, E+, subscriptions, upgrades, bag fees

Can I partially use an ETC and then pay the remainder with a credit card (to get the card's benefits)?
No, the ETC must be fully used (up to the needed amount). Only if the ETC is insufficient, can a credit card then be used.

If I make a booking with an ETC and then cancel -- what happens?
Normally it would just stay as flight credit. If refunded, it goes back to the original ETC (recent reports suggest a new ETC is now issued). If that has expired, it gets tricky, UA may create a new ETC -- this situation generally takes manual handling. It does not get converted to cash

How many ETCs can be used at one time?
There is a limit of one ETC per passenger. If you have multiple passengers on the PNR, you can apply 1 ETC each ( does not have to be the same value ETC nor does ETC to be applied to every passenger). (Recent reports suggest the use of multiple ETCs per passenger). If you have more ETCs than passengers, you can now combine ETCs. You can also use one-ways to double the number of opportunities to use ETCs vs roundtrips.
Combinability update July 2017 - ETCs can be combined (either a new ETC created with the expiration date of the earliest-expiring ETC or multiple ETCs used on a PNR). Appears will only combine ETC if you need to do this to book a flight. Initially, UA seemed to allow the combining for future use but most reports now suggest you need to also have a flight booking in mind using the new combined ETC.
Combinability update June 2020 - ETCs can be combined at the website payment screen without calling (see post 690)

Where in your profile does it show the outstanding ETC? That would be helpful if they listed them but I haven't seen that before. Thanks in advance

It is new and there is a thread all about it
Now See All Your Electronic Travel Credit(s) (ETCs) on Your United.com Account!

Short answer go to your My Account -- exactly how there are displayed is different online vs app

Note: not all ETCs are showing for all -- VDBs are not listed and appears some ETCs were issued without reference to a UA MP account

how to check how much $ is left in my travel certificate

where and how to check how much $ is left in my travel certificate

I got a $1000 Electronic Travel Cerificate with a United logo receipt on May 20, 2019 when I volunteered for the next day intl. flight due to their overbooking.
I used some values in June 2019, but i forgot how much value is left. Where and how to check the left $ ?

I heard that United electronic travel certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. Does that apply to my certificate ?
Sorry, i haven't kept up with all the changes since early Feb.

Enter type (see below) and PIN as a single code without any spaces. Then the page will say it couldn't find anything and offer you a place to enter your last name.
Type will likely be "19TCVA"
It a bit slow in responding at time

Yes, applied to all unexpired ETCs -- unfortunately the online system does not show the date. Phone agents can verify

Both vouchers were for the same flight. The first one for $300 I've got after my flight IAD-ROC in F was cancelled and I was put in the last minute on AA flight out of DCA in economy. They gave me this voucher even before I got from IAD to DCA to catch that flight. I've never asked for it.
The second voucher I've got after I've sent inquiry asking if they will refund $30 that I had to pay for baggage fee on this flight. I've got apology letter and another voucher for $150. So I can see the small voucher but I can't see the big one on UA.com

I cancelled four flights for this summer. Two separate paid reservations, one reservation (res. #1 ) for my parents (2 pax EWR-DUB) and one reservation (res #2 ) for my husband and I (2 pax DEN-EWR-DUB). All UA metal in business. My parents are in their 80's and we decided it did not make sense for them to travel this summer. I was not seeking a cash refund. I wanted ETCs for all and plan to combine them for another trip for my husband and I.

So, I went to my account. I could have cancelled res #2 online. However, res #1 would not allow me to cancel and said I needed to call. So, spoke with a rep and she cancelled all and requested ETCs. Three days later, I was emailed the ETCs/pins for res #1 . Now 21+ days out, still nothing on res #2 . I kick myself for not cancelling it online myself and just seeking action from the rep on res #1 .

I have called multiple times and spoken with UA. They research and simply state I need to wait.

How long is it taking for others to get ETCs? Its not like I am asking for a cash refund. They get to keep my money.

Thoughts and advice?

Thanks so much.

I called this week about a reservation that I had which was canceled, but the value is still in the PNR. I asked the reservation agent could I use that value for a ticket for someone other than myself. Agent said under the PNR credit I must travel however she can convert it to an ECERT but it may take up to three weeks or so for them to process. I guess they’re really backed up, and since you have waited around 21 days hopefully by weeks end you’ll have what you’re seeking. Best of luck and let us know how it turns out

Combining Electronic Travel Certificate

I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but I didn't immediately find it with a quick search.

Is it possible to combine travel certificates issued to different recipients?

I've got about 20 certificates across my family of 6, small for really small amounts. My preference would be for 1 large certificate.

If I do have one large certificate, I don't have to spend it all at once, correct?

Any tips on how to navigate this?

It's been my experience that theyll combine them over the phone as long as its equal to / less the fare being booked. They won't combine into 1 and give you one ETC for "change."

A quick update. I did finally receive the two outstanding ECERTs 30 days after cancellation with the agent. Who knows why the first two took only three days and the other two 30 days...Now on to contacting UA to combine multiple certs and booking new flights for two passengers. I will let you all know how that goes.

happy to hear that it worked out, yeah I can’t figure out why some came quickly and others didn’t but the agent told me it could take up to three weeks. In your case for weeks..

Final update (hopefully). After receiving the remaining ETCs, I called and the agent quickly combined (six total - under various names) into a single certificate under my MP account. It was really simple and no grief to get it done. I received an email with the details and the electronic ETC information in my MP account pretty much immediately. I then went online and used a portion of the new single ETC to book for travel to Tahiti in May. This trip may or may not happen (pending COVID), so we will hope for the best. The residual $ on my ETC immediately showed in my account too. Overall, this part was pretty simple.

Haven't seen this mentioned: the website purchase system now allows combining ETCs for a single ticket (single traveler).
