Enter type and pin as a single code and then it will ask for Last Name.

Electronic Travel Certificates (ETCs) / vouchers can only be used for travel on an entirely UA/UX operated paid itinerary.
No partner flights.
No award flights.
ETC can be used by anyone with the PIN and last name of the original person receiving the ETC.
If not fully used the residual can be used later with the same original expiration.
ETCs will be used for the total amount needed (no partial payments if the ETC has a greater value)

TVCA certs with PINs (by far the most common ecert most customers will receive -- such as goodwill compensation from Customer Care or refunds on flights) are considered a form of payment and don't reduce the PQDs earnings.

Expiration -- ETCs generally have a 1-year life. The ETC should be used prior to expiration -- but the actual travel days can be after expiration. While not publically documented, it does appear ETCs have a 30 day (one month?) post-expiration grace period.

How do I use the ETC?
Online works fine or you can call and used an agent (a fee may apply)

Online, either select "all search" options and scroll to the bottom of the screen to enter
or
wait until you get to the Payment Options at the end of the purchasing steps and select "United payment types"
Enter pin code (7 or 10 digits) and Last Name on the ETC

Where online can I view my unused ETCs?
You cannot. No such listing is available.
You can call and ask an agent to look these up for you. Note agents will not provide the ETC PIN on the phone.

Can an ETC be used for covering the costs of a post-purchase upfare?
Multiple reports of success but one mentioned it would need to be the sole method of payment.
Can only be done by an agent -- not online
Can not be an upgrade fee, must be an upfare.

Can an ETC be used to UC membership or E+ access fee or change fee or award fee or upgrade co-pay or baggage fee or ...
ETCs can only be used for airfare, not for any fee

Can I partial use an ETC and then pay the remainder with a credit card (to get the card's benefits)?
No, the ETC must be fully used (up to the needed amount). Only if the ETC is insufficient, can a credit card then be used.

Combinability update July 2017 - ETCs can be combined (either a new ETC created with the expiration date of the earliest-expiring ETC or multiple ETCs used on a PNR). Appears will only combine ETC if you need to do this to book a flight. Initially UA seemed to allow the combining for future use but most reports now suggest you need to also have a flight booking in mind using the new combined ETC.

Anybody has an experience with cancelling a refundable ticket that was purchased with an ETC? I get the option to get a refund in the form of an ETC, but it requires a mailing address for this - does this mean the new ETC will be actually MAILED (and not eMailed) to me? Is there any way to get the ETC quicker than waiting for a letter to arrive in Europe?

Thanks for your experience!

Greetings - Dirk

I wouldn't count on it being mailed or e-mailed. A customer service agent will be able to look it up from your account. If you have the PNR of the cancelled reservation, that would likely make it easier for them.

Problem is that this is a combined ETC (from three ETCs I had)...I do not have the PIN of that ETC as I never had that.

The PIN wouldn't have done you any good anyway, as they will issue a new one. The customer service representative should be able to look it up based upon the confirmation number of the reservation that you're cancelling.

yeah, apparently. It also rarely works. Getting # and PIN from CS is the way to go, if it shows up via snail mail ... you got the into twice.

I'm looking into booking a flight and I have two ETC's. On the payment page I can only enter one ETC. Is there a way to combine two ETC's into one? According to the wiki a new ETC can be created with the expiration date of the earliest expiring ETC. I asked United about this on Facebook and they say you can only redeem two ETC's by making a phone booking.

Is calling really gonna be my only option to get these two ETC's redeemed? I'm not residing in the US and I'd like to skip the phone bill and 'booking service fee' that starts at $25.

you donít need to book over the phone. But if thereís only one traveler, then you have to have them combined first, then can use the new one when you make the booking online. ETC terms are always one per passenger. If there are two passengers you are booking for, then you can use both ETCs for the same booking.

if youíre flying a round trip on a route that has one way fares that are half a round trip (many, but not all, domestic routes have this), then you can also book two one ways. Just note there are disadvantages to this (I.e, if you find later on you need to make changes to both the outbound and return, you will need to pay change fees twice).

There's just me so that shouldn't be an issue. You say I have to get them combined first. Can Customer Service combine two into one which I can then use online?

There have been reports that agents are requiring you to have a booking to combine ETCs. Some will, some don't.

Suggestions.
Call and ask if the agent will waive the fee since this can not be done online.

For some tickets, it is possible to select "pay in Person" under payment types. Then call, there is no booking fee.
Partner flights may disable this option

For calling, use Skype, Google Voice, ..... (other internet calling serivices) that are free or ultra low cost)

Determining ETC value

Mods, please feel free to move this if an existing post covers this question.

I have a variety of ETC's accumulated over the last 12 months. I have used some in total or part, but have not done a good job keeping track of what I have used. Is there a way (short of doing a dummy booking and trying to apply each ETC) to determine the value remaining of each ETC? Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the link. However, this appears to be for "Promotional Programs". When I enter the ETC # for one I know is valid, it comes back with an error message "We did not recognize the offer code entered", and "If your offer can be combined with a United travel certificate, you’ll have the opportunity to include your certificate information on the Payment page". Help!

18TCVA or 19TCVA

OP, you need to add either 18TCVA or 19TCVA before your PIN on your search, depending upon which year (2018 or 2019) the Ecert was issued. Then, you will be asked for last name and then no-robot stuff. Good luck.

From the thread's wiki

Enter type and pin as a single code and then it will ask for Last Name.
