Compensation question

Bought a last minute ticket using miles from IAD-YUL-IAD plus $75 United fee.

My return flight from YUL-IAD was cancelled and I was placed on a AC flight to DCA instead.

I had to cab back to IAD on my dime to pick up my car.

Am I owed the cab fare and maybe a refund of the $75 mileage fee (for cancelling my flight)?

You can try for the cab fare but my guess is you would have had a better chance dealing with it at the time rather than after the fact.

Almost certainly not on the $75 fee.

Yes. Though the title of this thread is wrong. You aren't due "Compensation". You are due reimbursement.

Correct reimbursement of my cab fare.

Maybe- $75 compensation (really just refunding my fee) for flying me to an airport an hour away, separating me from my wife with regards to seating and having to cab back to the original airport.

The problem is that you accepted that flight. However, I would complain on united.com and see what happens.

Based on CoC, nothing is due at all - DCA and IAD is in the same city pair.

But if you write a nice letter to customer relations, you may get yourself a ETC to "retroactive" cover the cab.

I also have had to cab between DCA and IAD a couple of times and have always asked for a cab voucher at the arriving airport and have been given one.

I am curious... what did you say to United about this when they rebooked you and you accepted the new flight?

I am assuming you knew you were flying into a different airport?

United doesn't run their desk in Montreal, it is contracted out to Swissport (I was told). They pretty much said if you want to leave today, go to the Air Canada desk and we will have a voucher waiting for you over there.

I did not want to get stuck overnight in Montreal so I took the flight to the wrong airport, not the end of the world, just wondering if it was common practice to waive the $75 fee since they delivered me to the wrong airport.

I have submitted a request to United and will let you know how it goes.

Thanks for your responses.

Depending on why it was cancelled, how how much later you got in, maybe you should be asking for more than just your cab fare?

You got the IAD-YUL segment without any hitches right? I think that shoots your claim for the $75. You say "wrong" airport, but you did accept it.

Yes IAD-YUL went off without a hitch, but everyone keeps saying you did accept it....of course I accepted, doesnt mean I wanted it, or enjoyed, I really didnt have a choice...Maybe I should receive $37.50 back.

Its kind of like hey we can deliver you to an airport that wastes 3 hours of your time and a $75 cab ride or you can wait overnight in a foreign country (take a day off of work) and we will deliver you to the airport you purchased a day late...Of course I am going to "accept", not happy about it. Not the end of the world, I hold no ill will against United, sxit happens, but I do not feel the need to have paid miles plus $75 penalty fee and cab fare for their sxit happening.

I was just wondering if it was common practice to give back some or all of the penalty fee if they messed up along the way (i am not asking for my miles back, just the penalty fee).

No, it is not. Just like it is not common to refund part of the fare in a similar situation.
