IIRC, post-3/3 I have had luck with this similar situation twice on TPAC flights, where I was able to call in T<24 with R/RN>0 and get the upgrade. FWIW I believe I got agents from either Houston or Chicago both times.

AFAIK, there is no greater RN availability than R. Hope I'm wrong. Don't know about forcing the upgrade or any domestic/international ticket differences for this.

I believe they said back in March that things like RN being a real separate fare bucket (as opposed to just matching R) wouldn't start for some months. Given the mess they've made with SHARES we'd probably end up with RN=0, R=1 and elites not clearing if they did it now...

I went for a W fare that also was not much more than the non upgradable fares. The ticket was confirmed overnight and I went in to manage my bookings to apply the upgrades. I am WL for both tatl segments using the global upgrades. UA so generously offered to upgrade me if I gave them miles and cash though....grrrrrr

I think I have had two relevant post 3/3 experiences:

In April, I received an EF email that R space opened on an international leg at T24. I called and got a BF seat. I'm a 1K. A GS traveling companion was shut out and really pissed (at UA, not me :p).

More recently, for a flight NRT-SIN tomorrow, R class opened up a few days ago due to an equipment swap (new 777 for old config :(). Sweep did not occur, so I called in after receiving my EF notification, and was quickly given a seat in BF by calling the 1K line.

Both experiences were relatively painless (minus me having to call in). Both phone calls took less than 15 minutes. YMMV.

Question

If you see R space opening at T<24, does it make any difference calling to force the GPU upgrade before or after OLCI?

I'd assume not, but with all the gremlins in the system maybe someone has had different experiences with this.

  1. Try to find flight w/ RN space, but if none available, book flight with RN0, apply GPU and get put on waitlist. (Book w/ GPU eligible fare.)
  2. Check daily to see if RN space opens up (check specific segments as RN space shows differently if there are connections).
  3. If/when space opens up and the upgrade does not automatically clear, either...
    a) apply another GPU to get the upgrade to clear immediately and hope United will refund the "waitlisted" GPU when I call.
    b) call United immediately and get them to push through the waitlisted upgrade hoping that someone doesn't book it prior to getting it pushed through.

Is this correct? Does this strategy change when under T-24?

If I paid for a EF account is there an e-mail alert I can set for if RN space opens up on specific flights? Does a basic account work or do I need a premium account for this?

Is there a better way to go about this?

Thank you in advance!

So now that we will no longer be able to see R/RN space available what is the new strategy?

Would this work...

under T-24 call in and act like I want to book a ticket using a GPU on a flight during the same day. Ask if there is any confirm-able space open, and if there is then ask to have wait-listed GPU applied?

If one can't readily access R/RN availabilty GPU's are useless. Why would anybody buy up to a W class ticket? Miles and cash are now king for upgrades...

I agree completely, which is why I'm switching to Delta because of this. Unfortunately I already have a wait-listed GPU and would like to see if there is a workaround for this.

I'm sure there are others that this won't be the last straw and therefore will continue to have to use this workaround.

Guys, can anyone fill me on in on all these acronyms? What is GPU??? I looked a the FT glossary, but they don't have a lot listed.

What is an R/RN fare?

Global Premier Upgrade = GPU
R/RN is upgrade space...

So if you purchase a ticket while R = 1, you could use a GPU and immediately confirm the upgrade.

I say this in past tense as we will no longer be able to see R/RN availability after tonight.

I didn't know that we can no longer see R/RN space. What's your source for this? I checked R/RN space as recently as 2 hours ago on EF.

Anyone know if this will mean no fare class data including R space shown on EF too?
