Due to the length of concourse B, a connection under an hour when the arriving or departing flight is a UA mainline aircraft, is not advised. If you arrive on the far west end and depart on the far east end, then allowing for the time it takes deboard the plane, and the 20 minute cut off when UA starts to cancel seat assignments, you are unlikely to make your connection. Of course sitting in the front of the arriving plane helps as does having no green tagged bags.

However, if both aircraft are United Express, then a 45 minute connection is acceptable because all United Express flights arrive and depart on the east end of concourse B. Due to construction some United Express flights are utilizing concourse A which requires a transfer via train.

I have 587 flights since 1997 in my flight log departing or arriving Denver Int'l Airport and I have never experienced a failure or significant delay with the train system between terminals. Yes, there have been incidents in the past that leaves everyone at a stand still anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour at most, but these incidents are exceedingly rare.

To the OP, a 43 minute connection is actually a 28 minute connection considering boarding ends 15 minutes (and maybe even more than this) before scheduled departure. As others have pointed out, if you miss the LH departure at 5:30pm, you are out of same day options and you better hope the FRA or MUC flight has available seats the next day. Don't do it....it's not worth the risk in my opinion.

If 1858 stays on the 767/77 fleet, then your gates would only be b32/36/38 in denver, which is near the train platform. That being said, I have noticed the constant delay with that flight whether it's been mainenance or SFO weather. With your trip that late in the year, DEN's winter weather could pose a problem as well with deicing delays causing a ground delay program.

I have had far fewer flights through DIA but I have experienced train delays and outages more at DIA than any other airport. Yes even hour long delays and the locals did not like complaints and jokes about DIA while they were experiencing the same train delay. Even my friend from Wyoming complains bout the train system at DIA. It is his closest major airport for travel to the east coast.

Dec 17, 2017 - DEN-FRA - LH447 - 5:30pm-11:05am(+1)
And then FRA-DXB on LH630.

My primary concern is the low connection time of 43 minutes at DEN. How doable is this, considering Denver weather in December and other factors? Google tells me that UA1858 is often delayed by 30+ min, but so is LH447. Also, how far apart are the United domestic/Lufthansa international gates at Denver airport? What's the possibility that Lufthansa holds the flight for me, in case I get delayed? What about my baggage (2 pcs check-in), will they make the connection?

In case I do miss my flight, who do I go to for rebooking, United or Lufthansa? Also, the next flight to FRA is only after 24 hrs so will United provide accommodation/meals? Or could they reroute me sooner through some other airport? What's the policy on this, and in general for codeshare international connections?
Not enough time, if you are behind the wing on UA you will have at least 10min before you get off, and if you come in at B-18, you are a 7-10 min walk to the train, plus 5 minutes for the train (including waiting) and 3-5 minutes to get to the LH gate, that is easily 25 minutes to connect assuming you are on time into DEN which only gives you 5 minutes to spare until the door closes, pick another UA flight.

Also, I believe UA will be required to pay you up or reroute you (unless it is in the summer when LH has the 22:30 ORD-FRA you won't be going to Germany that same day. UA will have to only have to put you up if it is their fault, and from my experience most SFO delays are out as ATC it WX.

UA flights with 30 minutes connection in DEN

The UA website allows me to book a MCO-DEN-SEA trip, with 30 minutes connection time in SEA:

UA 432, MCO-DEN, 27JUL18, 19:20 - 21:30
UA 505, DEN-SEA, 27JUL18, 22:00 - 23:47

Can this really work?
Do they hold the DEN-SEA flight in case of delay of the MCO-DEN arrival, or will they simply move people to the next day flight?

Yes, if you arrive at DEN on time and the flights are not at opposite ends of the concourse.

They might do either.

There's a good chance you spend the night in Denver.

Only if you get lucky and your 1st flight is on-time/early AND your gates are close. It isn't worth taking the risk.

UA will pay for it if the inbound flight from MCO is delayed due to issues within their control (e.g., mechanical issues). They will not pay for it if the inbound flight is on time but you're not able to make it because you didn't run fast enough, or if the inbound flight is delayed due to issues outside of their control (e.g., weather).

I would not book that connection personally. UA requires that you appear in the gate area 15 minutes prior to departure, so, if everything is on time, that gives you 15 minutes to get off of your MCO flight and get to the SEA gate. If they're right next to each other, that's somewhat reasonable; if you land at one end of terminal and have to get to the other end, it's not.

Is it better to take the MCO-IAH-SEA option, with 1 hour in IAH?

Isn't a connection in IAH much more time consuming?

(please note we will be 4, including our 2 young kids)

Even if you make it (and as others have said there's a real chance you wont), then your bags very likely won't.

I ended up with about a 25 minute connection in DEN a year or so back due to a delayed inbound. Running between gates I just made it, but it was one of the rare occasions that I'd checked a bag, and the bag didn't make the connection...

I would absolutely take the 1 hour connection at IAH before a 30 minute connection at DEN. IAH has a train system that connects all of the terminals airside (inside security), so there's an upper limit on how long it can take to get from place to place. Besides, the extra time you have more than makes up for the fact that you might have to go further to get to your connecting gate.

Second this. IAH is a breeze. You will be on mainline for both flights so you will arrive and depart out of C and/or E terminals which is all connected and walkable.

I would chance it were the flights in the early morning. The later in the day you go the more likely your MCO-DEN flight will be delayed, and Murphy's Law dictates that the DEN-SEA flight will then leave 5 minutes early.
