United Club members and their guests are entitled to a gate pass to get through security and access the United Club at domestic airports, regardless of whether or not they are traveling.
Purchasing a one time Club pass does not entitle on to a gate pass. That is a benefit of United Club members until Aug 18, 2016.
*** AUGUST 2015 UPDATE ***
UA has announced that same day boarding passes will be required for UA club access effective August 18, 2016.
In a clarification, UA Insider clarified that there will be no more gate passes. See Post 195 at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...-travel-6.html
Hi everyone, some answers for you on this new policy:
1.What about meetings/conference rooms? Will gate passes still be issued?
Customers can still reserve a conference room to use, with or without a same-day boarding pass. We will no longer issue gate passes for other uses.
The following information applies prior to that date.
There is a lot of confusion about this arrangement, so it is helpful to dispel some misimpressions you might have or might encounter: You do not need to book a conference room or make any sort of reservation to obtain a gate pass. Gate passes are an entitlement that come with your United Club membership, and not a discretionary favor. When you obtain a gate pass, your data is put through the same secure flight system that is used to approve boarding pass issuance. There is no reason to think that these gate passes are more of a security risk than the ability to simply buy a same-dayticket at the airport, and there is no evidence that the TSA has in any way limited the airlines' ability to issue gate passes. Gate passes are used extensively for other purposes, such as permitting parents to meet unaccompanied minors at their arrival gate.
To get a gate pass, simply go to a check-in counter at the airport, present your club membership card and photo ID, and ask for one.
At some airports, there are dedicated lanes for this and similar services:
You may get push-back from the counter agent, because this is a relatively unusual request. If that happens, try escalating through the following steps:
1. Ask for a gate pass.
2. Reference GG Checkpoint, Line 65** (screenshot courtesy of tarheelnj and updated June 2015) **Note: Nov 2015 update - Reference Line 68.

3. Ask for a supervisor.
4. Ask the agent(s) to call the UC.
5. Call the UC directly, and ask them to talk to or directly call the counter agent. Many counter phones have direct lines, and you can ask the counter agent to provide you that info so that the UC can call them.
The phone number for a particular UC can be determined by calling the UC customer service line at 866-822-5827 (open 0800-2000 Central Time, daily). Here are some known phone numbers:
6. Give up, collect the names of everyone you've spoken with, and write to Premier Voice or 1K Voice with a polite request that the folks be retrained, and that a local service manager follow up with you so that you can be assured that you will be provided access next time you visit the airport. This last step may seem like overkill, but it will help ensure that other folks don't end up having the same problem with the agent(s) in the future.
To help track which airports are appropriately applying this policy, please consider noting below whether or not you were successful in obtaining a gate pass using a thumbs-up or thumbs-down icon. Then, provide a more detailed report in a post in this thread if you have time. (E.g.: "Asked at AUS and was denied by a surly agent; quickly gave up because it wasn't worth my time" or "Got a great agent at 1K/Plat check-in at EWR, wanted the pass to take my daughter through security and to the UC, agent took care of it in 2 minutes.")

little bit of a tangent but the 24 hour cancellation depends on the airline. UA does offer a 24 hour cancel so it's okay here, but i've heard some people reference the regulation that went into effect for this last year:
http://www.dot.gov/affairs/2012/dot0812.html
which is true for all airlines in the US, but the fine print for the actual law is one week in advance. just a friendly reminder that the two aren't the same.

Actually, I was referring to a fully-refundable ticket, not related to the 24-hour window which is applicable to all tickets.
Any rule regarding those?

When I was in EWR Saturday I overhead a loud conversation between a Red Coat Agent and a customer. A guy wanted a gate pass as his 18 year old daughter had never flown before and he wanted to escort her andmade sure she was OK till boarding. The agent said no to the gate pass as she was old enough to go alone, they went on and on and then agent was giving in a little, said well you should have called ahead of time. Still no gate pass. As the conversation was breaking up, I kind of butted in and told the man about buying a refundable ticket to have airport access and then cancel the ticket. The Red Coat kind of gave me a dirty look but did not say anything. I think he knows people do that just to have not put up with run around you have to do not just for a gate pass but also getting access to the Club when not flying.
These rules exist for reasons. I know we think rules exist to break, but why the heck did he have to have a gate pass or take his daughter in?

Or... tell the parent to let go. The daughter is an adult and if she can't handle getting to the gate and getting on a plane, she shouldn't be traveling.

I would stop in the Board Room when FlyerTalkers would pass through ANC on MRs, and I would meet arriving friends and family and escort them to the gate when I left. I'd also occasionally (occasionally!) drop by on my own, as it was a quiet place to work with great views, and it was probably one of my most productive work environments. In those instances, I was usually too late for soup, and since I was driving, I'd avoid alcohol and probably use a total of 15 cents worth of soda. Assuming wholesale food costs, I estimate the Board Room still made an annual marginal profit of about $150 on me, and I made sure to let them know they were losing that by their stupid policy change.
In the future, just say you're a club member and need a gatepass to go to the club. As pointed out several times in this thread, keep a print out of the very handy screenshot in post #1 , and cite the Shares profile gg checkpoint, line #53 should you encounter an uninformed agent (for which you'll have the screenshot to back you up).

What is the actual name for the system they use to look up the GG codes in? Or is it a simple command directly in the SHARES interface? Is saying "please look up GG CHECKPOINT" good enough (will ALL UA agents immediately what that means?), or do I need to say, "Please open the Helpfile [or whatever] system and look up the code GG CHECKPOINT"?

Maybe 2 months ago, at Denver, at 1K check in. Had to reference GG Checkpoint and explain to the sUA people it was a legacy CO policy but then they did it without further question (albeit a raised eyebrow, literally).

I just tried it recently. Only one beep, so no Pre-Check (and that was with me asking for my GS number to be added to the record). Also the gate pass (actually a BP) showed me in Group 7, so I suspect that while your personal info is transmitted to the TSA, your status (elite or GE) isn't. Still, with no bags (and careful to leave my pocket knife in the car before heading into the airport) and using the GS lane, I was through security just about as quickly as if I'd used the Pre-Check lane.

have had no issues at IAH (done it 3 times)
well when i tried to do it in LAS, it took 30 mins!!!! i wanted to go wait with my g/f and wait till her flight left to SYD. we planned on hanging out at the club before her plane left.........so we proceed to check her in......then i give the premier access agent my club card and drivers license and told him i need access to the club. he said are you flying, i said nope. he said well you cant then. i go sir, yes i can, its one of the perks and iv done it numerous times at other airports without issues. he said, NOPE! you must be flying also. i said come on man, just call the club and ask them.......he wouldn't so we proceeded to go talk to his supervisor who also had an attitude and told me i was wrong!! after 20 mins back and forth (the original agent looking over waiting for me to be WRONG LOL) she finally accepted....she would call the lounge and ask.......of course that call lasted seconds, the guy told her yes thats one of the perks (i asked the club guy what he told her when she called once i got to the club)....she hangs up and says they told her, if she wanted to grant us access it was up to her and she would be responsible, not them, but they (the club) wasnt going to come down and grant us access ... so she then says she must call her boss and ask, well after all this fighting, FINALLY was given a pass.....as i walked towards security i walked pass the guy who told me no, absolutely not and said....just so you know, your WRONG!!! he said, no i am not and i said yea whatever dude......see ya
why do these ppl have to be so hard headed, seriously, if you dont know for sure, just pick up the phone and ask the club!!
