United Flights/Charters for Sports Teams / military (once 18XX, then 22XX, now 25XX}
I was checking flight status for a friend flying the first ATL to ORD flight of the day today. I noticed the where does this flight come from link on united.com. pretty neat feature btw, don't have that over at delta. anyway, my question is when I clicked on it it said flt1809 from PHL to ATL arriving around 0130 this morning. anyone know what this flight was for? this in not a normal UA route.

Maybe for one of the baseball teams for which UA provides charter service? The Nationals just ended a series against the Phillies and their next one is against the Braves.

Yes the low 1800's are sports charters where they use the same numbers throughout the season.
Some Examples
1801 - Cleveland Indians
1802 - LA Dodgers
1803 - Chicago White Sox
1804 - Chicago Cubs
1805 - Kansas City Royals
1809 - Washington Nationals
1818 - Denver Broncos
I have found the numbers around 1848 and so are usually for deadhead flights to get a plane back in position, especially when a team flies into Midway, Burke Lakefront, etc.
With 1850 in this situation, it was most likely to swap out the locations of the A320 so there was one available in ATL as well as PHL. Easier to do that then to have the one crew fly late into the night on the return back to PHL.

Thanks for the replies. I thought about a sports charter, but I only checked where the Phillies were playing, I forgot to consider the away team playing in Philly.

Ua 1848 mdw-ord?
My Aunt is waiting at the airport as her flight ORD-SEA is delayed by two hours so far. Me being the "United Expert 1K" in the family she contacted me to see if I know what was going on with the flight. It says it is awaiting inbound aircraft. When I clicked "where is this aircraft coming from" it says it is UA 1818 from MDW to ORD. Anyone have any info? It triggered my curiosity.

18xx are charter flights, I believe. Look at where 1848 came from, it was 1803 from LAX-MDW.
Looks like White Sox charter at a guess - on way back from Dodgers. Then just a positioning flight back to ORD.

The Chicago White Sox use UA for their charter flights.
UA 1803 LAX - MDW landed last night just before midnight.
UA 1848 was the ferry flight to get the A320 (Ship 4626 -- N426UA) re-positioned to ORD. Thing is, it landed last night about 1:00am.
From there, flew UA 742 to IAH this morning at 5:32a. After that the trail goes cold. Suffice it to say, the plane is in the air from somehwere else than ORD.

UA1804/1852 today
A most bizarre turn - LGA-STL-LGA. Scheduled 90 min on the ground. Don't see any sports teams coming to town. What am I missing here?
