I don't think this question ever got a reply. I've just booked a flight with this configuration and am trying to decide if 14C is a decent seat that I can choose while waiting for a possible upgrade to E+ at checkin. Can anybody explain why 14C is E- but 14D is E+?

Believe that's the seatmap for the 39M.. is that the plane type on your reservation? The difference on the sides of the aisle stem from the size and presence of the midlav.

Thanks to a 4h30 delay and some nice IRROPS recovery, I got my first time in Row 5 (flew in 5E). It was.. not as bad as I had feared from some of the reviews here. I would certainly happily take 5E over any seat in the Economy cabin. Recline was stopped by the bulkhead maybe 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through, but was still quite noticeable. I was not aware of the pax using the mid-lav just behind, although it was a shorter flight so there was no time to accumulate any mess.
All in all, still the "worst" row in the cabin, but I would not call it horrible by any stretch.

There are basically no good Y seats in this cabin. The issue with the exit rows is the seats have less padding, and in row 21 you may get knees in your back since it's E- behind you. The window also has a pathetic mini-armrest. I typically just take an E+ towards the front of the cabin, e.g., row 9. That said, row 21 is an okay choice for a flight under two hours or so.

Welcome to FT, gmake5!
You'll have to provide us the type of equipment. United flies a bunch of different models, and they all have different seating.

Which aircraft? The answer will vary based on which plane you are on.
You can also check the seat maps at www.seatguru.com for more detailed information.
