question on holding an award reservation

I would like to hold a 1 way international AWARD reservation for my friend, get the confirmation code, and then have another friend to ticket this holding reservation, It seems this is not an option for UA? I can not get a confirmation code without actually purchasing the ticket.
is it true?

thx

You can purchase it and then cancel it within 24 hours for a refund of he miles and any fees at no cost. Note that there have been some reports of delays with getting the mileage redeposited. (My experience is that the mileage has been credited back to my account right away, but I am pretty lucky in general.)

If I purchase it, then my friend can not ticket this reservation by using his miles?

Can't your other friend just make the booking? Help me understand why you need to make the reservation and another person needs to ticket... I guess I don't understand why it has to be two separate actions.

I tried to help my friend in Asia to book a way award flight to US but I do not have enough miles, my friend in US does not personally know my other friend in Asia, so it will be easy for me to put a reservation on hold then have my friend in US to ticket it like AA or US airways does, but it seems UA has different rules now.

However after I pass some personal data (passport number, DOB, name) to my friend in US, he is able to book the flight for my friend in Asia

In my case, these are usually friends whom I never personally met on the CC thread. ;-)

NOT saying that for the OP's case.
