I've never been on one of these and it looks like a fairly easy upgrade since there are so many FC seats.
Here see for yourself. This is the interior of the Ghetto Bird. It's definitely throw back in time if your use to newer Boeings and LiveTV. I haven't seen an AirPhone since early 2000s.

Yes, but you do know that all the CO a/c with the loop-style IFE still have an airphone (non-functioning) on the back side of the remote control.

Plus, although I am no special fan of the Ghetto Birds, that interior looks pretty indistinguishable from virtually any airliner you would fly in the United States today.

Someone told me that and I had no idea all these years. Never thought to look on the back of the remote. That big Airphone in the seatback on UA brings back memories. Kind of hard to miss.

Good point.

Actually, the most interesting thing about the Ghetto Birds--at least to me--is how minimal its first class section is, with the normal 38" seat pitch and, at 19", the narrowest first class seats in the UA fleet.

On his blog (thewanderingaramean.com) sbm12 tells a pretty funny story about traveling on a Ghetto Bird DEN-HNL. He had a seat in FC, but in order to accommodate a couple who wanted to sit together, he ended up voluntarily downgrading himself to E+.

As he explains it, it wasn't much of a downgrade, since the legroom of E+ was ample and virtually the same as FC, and the seat only very slightly narrower (it's actually only one inch narrower).

When the f/a came around to him, she was shocked that he downgraded himself, and even slightly admonished him, but she ended up serving him the FC meal and beverage service anyway.

It's a well written piece and full of entertaining self-deprecating humor:

circa '90s. But that allows us to re-enact the "Welcome aboard....*click* (of the storage bin)" from the safety video.

And upon the bump of landing, the one latch over the first row of Y on the right side invariably opens up, and we all watch to see if something will fall out.

winglettes, replace F cabin 2-2-2 with BF cabin 2-1-2.

You are right, I also think your chances are slim to none. (but hoping we are wrong.)

Thanks! I'm guessing that means that my SFO-KOA upgrade copay would be much, much higher if BF were already installed.

Don't be hating on the airphones y'all. What's so bad about 1999?

Good point. The GB interior is actually a pretty good fit when you look at the new website - 1999 design indeed.

That is about all that can be said.
Love it!

Actually as crazy as it sounds, I prefer Y on this bird. I wouldn't waste an upgrade instrument for sure, but I find a middle aisle (XX OXX XX) O being me, to be pretty spacious. I even flew it from ORD-HNL once, probably too long a flight for this type of plane, but its better than the 73G thats for sure!

Which is better than the wine they now serve in F

If I can get an empty seat next to me, I prefer E+ to F on the Ghetto Bird...

You mean like any other US, DL, or AA 767 storage bin?

EWR-SFO on a widebody? I'd say go for it. UA hasn't flown widebodies on this route since the early 2000s. If not that then 1999. I'd take a UA 763 any day of the week over a PMCO 738.

I flew F on the ghetto bird from LAX-ORD in 2009 and thought it was comfortable enough. I think this is a term that the CO snobs came up with.
