90% of people who fly don't have either.

I've been amazed at the number to people on FT who think, every software feature should work pefectly after a merger, from day 1.

Sorry about my rant. To conclude the old 777s are terrible. Even first class in the old 777 is less comfortable than business in the new ones. Just because you check a seat map doesn't mean you won't get screwed later.

If I was ever flying full C and saw that the plane was old config I would walk off, cash in my ticket, and take another carrier. When I'm using an swu, though, it's hard to complain, as no other carrier I know of gives you 6+ upgrades that can be used for multiple segments. AA is close, but not quite there.
And as an overall comment to the thread, I can hardly equate getting a C class seat by using an upgrade as a waste. Sure, the new C is better than the old C for most, but I enjoyed many TPAC / TALT in the old C and greatly prefer it over E+ |

I thought AA gave 8 upgrade certs which could be used on any fare, which is better than what UA offers. Would you explain what is lacking from the AA offering. I am not an AA expert, but have been looking at them lately (along with a lot of 1Ks, I suspect). If there is a downside here, I would like to learn about it.

AA doesn't give CR-1s, so the 8 SWUs correspond to UA's 6 SWUs + 4 CR-1s (or, more if you fly over 100K).
I am much more focused on the int'l upgrade potential, I didn't think about the CR1s. Seems on AA, there is an domestic upgrade system that is able to be understood and results in elites getting domestic upgrades, so I am not as concerned there. UA is starting to bite in the UDU stats, from everything I am hearing.... |

Ditto what others have said... I have flow in a 777 in C domestically on an old config...
I would be very comfortable flying this TATL... But I only a mere silver... and I am about to sit in Y on a TPAC... I would sell my proverbial to have a old C recliner for the 15 hours to follow (ord LAX is in F, LAX-MEL is in Y... whY oh whY... oh, that's right, tax payers money...) |

Bolded the part about the AVOD. You assume the AVOD on the new 777 actually works, which it usually does not!!! :D
What's your sample size as a PMCO*G who mainly flies non-stop from Newark? Or is this a cheap shot? |
I'll take an old 777 anyday
Actually, the new config seats are marginally narrower. IMHO, because they are packed 8 abreast instead of 7, they feel substantially more crowded. The new ones are great for sleeping, but I struggle to get any work done in them, in spite of the availability of a normal socket to charge my laptop) whereas the old ones are OK (why, you can even store your stuff at your feet).
I was thrilled last week when an old 777 was swapped in for a new one for my LAX-IAD business class upgrade. I hate the lack of at-seat storage space on the new 767s and 777's. I'm 5 feet tall and have a shoulder injury, and was dreading getting everything in and out of the overhead bins. But since the plane was swapped to the old 777, I could put my small rolling bag and all my carry-on items at my feet and in the seat pockets. :) The new CO BusinessFirst seats are the best of both worlds, and I book Lufthansa business class over the new United planes whenever I can. |

They justify it under the umbrella of "integration issues." Presumably it will eventually be resolved, but it may take the pax doing a lot of legwork and calls to get what previously was done automatically to happen.
I haven't seen a single post March 2 example of money and miles being returned after a failed upgrade.

Of course, the seat pitch is another matter... |
