MCT for EWR (2012)

https://www.newarkairport.com/at-airport/connecting-flights

United Airlines operates an "air side" shuttle bus between Terminals A and C from 4:00AM to 12:00AM (midnight). In addition, United also operates a shuttle bus connecting Terminals A and C to terminal B (pier 3, used by Star Alliance carriers) from 1:00PM to 11:00PM, but not in the opposite direction (shuttle does not board at Terminal B). The shuttle bus is available at gate A28 and C70 as illustrated in the image above. The shuttle drops off passengers at the terminal B through the service entry, that requires walking up 2 flights of stairs - there is no elevator. Only the front bus doors will open for alighting at terminal B.This service is free and you will not have to go through TSA security again. Please note this shuttle is operated at the sole responsibility of United Airlines and is subject to modification at their discretion.

Yes, there is, just after you come down the ramp from customs exit.

Yes, as soon as you walk out of the CBP (US Customs) area, there will be clear signs as well as airlines employees directing you to the bag recheck area for your domestic leg.

Overnight layover at EWR

So looking at return flights from Porto, Portugal to RDU with a layover at EWR - there is a good deal, but has a less than ideal (hence probably why it is a good deal) connection through EWR. You get in at 2100 into EWR, but don't leave for RDU until 7:45 AM.

1. Since we have to collect bags - can I simply drop them off after customs or will I have to take them with me and re-check in the AM?

What are my best options to waste time?
2. Get a hotel - there is a marriot I think you can walk to, By time you clear customs and and get to hotel it is probably pushing 2200 at best. Then you will have to get up at be back at security by 6am - or earlier if I have to recheck bags vs dropping them off (see #1 above)
3. There isn't any lounge that is open 24/7 I am guessing that we could at least just crash at.
4. Sleep in the terminal - last resort, my wife would leave me - lol - even if we wanted to, would we be allowed to go back through security at 2200 for a 745 am flight? (not sure if EWR closes security at night or not as I generally only connect through there, never actually go through security.

cheers!

EWR security at C is open 24-7 but for the sake of your marriage maybe stay at the hotel

But would the OP and his wife be eligible to clear security? Often airports wonít let you clear security the evening before a flight unless itís departing before 4 AM or thereabouts.

I donít think they really care. At worst they would have to wait until midnight but I doubt it.

FYI - saw this on sleeping in airports - but ya I am too old to do this anyway!
tangentially related- I think it was denver - but they had couches that I am pretty sure were more comfortable than the couch at home I fall asleep on most nights - it would be something I would be game for a situation like this,

Airport staff seem to be okay with overnight campers. Still, they will relocate anyone airside to the landside, public zones of the airport until about 4:00 AM, when security checkpoints open. Note: a traveller (April 2019) reported sleeping Airside in Terminal C from 11:00 PM – 6:00 AM with no issues from security. Please write a review to help future travellers.

Stay at the Marriott on airport grounds and take the shuttle directly from/to the airport. It runs every 15 min.
Bed, toilet, shower.....
SPN Lifer, tcdtcd, LIH and 2 others like this.

I'd book a hotel. I have found overnight layovers awake in the terminal (as well as an all nighter anyway) to really screw up my next day.

Thanks all - if I go this route - does anyone know the answer for #1? Do I have to take my bags with me, or can I drop them off right after customs and then in the morning, go right to security with my boarding pass to save the hassle of checking our luggage?

(not sure if EWR closes security at night or not as I generally only connect through there, never actually go through security.

cheers!
Any options for a later EWR-RDU flight?

They won’t keep your bags overnight.

there is, but a lot more points - hence the least desirable is the cheapest - will keep looking, it isn't for awhile so no hurry to commit at this point, just checking my options
