MCT for EWR (2012)

https://www.newarkairport.com/at-airport/connecting-flights

United Airlines operates an "air side" shuttle bus between Terminals A and C from 4:00AM to 12:00AM (midnight). In addition, United also operates a shuttle bus connecting Terminals A and C to terminal B (pier 3, used by Star Alliance carriers) from 1:00PM to 11:00PM, but not in the opposite direction (shuttle does not board at Terminal B). The shuttle bus is available at gate A28 and C70 as illustrated in the image above. The shuttle drops off passengers at the terminal B through the service entry, that requires walking up 2 flights of stairs - there is no elevator. Only the front bus doors will open for alighting at terminal B.This service is free and you will not have to go through TSA security again. Please note this shuttle is operated at the sole responsibility of United Airlines and is subject to modification at their discretion.

Changing terminals at EWR requires re-clearing security. So you're not just talking about a longer walk; you're talking about an AirTrain ride from Terminal C to Terminal A and then clearing security at Terminal A.

The proximity between the Polaris lounge and the UA gate would likely require a longer walk. All that said, EWR is not a big airport (despite the volume it handle) in terms of footprint.
To be clear, this is a description of accessing the Admirals Club at Newark if you're flying AA, vs. accessing the Polaris Lounge if you're flying UA. I interpreted your question as trying to access the PL when flying AA, which, while allowed, isn't really practical due to the need to clear security twice.

If I am interpreting OP's thought process correctly:

1) using the Polaris lounge, OP would be flying UA down to CLT
2) using the AA lounge, OP would be flying AA down to CLT

Thanks for your thoughts. Yes I will not have AA club access as I am no longer concierge key and I don't have an AA club membership. Will have priority pass.
After a 15 hour flight the Polaris lounge sounds appealing especially for breakfast, recharge, maybe even shower. If the UA gates/flights are closer to the Polaris lounge (especially if on the air side with no TSA checkpoint required between lounge and gate) then that is appeals to me to look at a United flight vs. an AA flight. Does that make sense?

However, the reopening of the EWR Polaris Lounge remains a big question.

In ordinary times connecting from C to B

I do not often travel through or to/from EWR anymore, but when I did the last time (October 2019), I hit the Sunday afternoon B International Departure crush in the security line, with most ElAl and most European airlines leaving at the same time. Even with priority security, I had to wait for around 45 minutes to get through, which is the longest I have experienced anywhere for many years. Having this in mind, I thought I'd ask a question, as I am planning to travel through EWR at around this time of year next year (i.e. May 2022), when hopefully the world will be more normal again.

I will arrive on UA from Florida (EYW), and connect to Europe on SK. UA arrival will probably be in C, SK departure will be from B. My question is about the post-security shuttle to Terminal B. As I do not know EWR very well, and the previous answers (and the EWR homepage) are not explicit about it: could someone confirm that the shuttle from C to B arrives beyond the security check-point of Terminal B International, i.e. that I will not have to go through Terminal B Security (or for that manner any security check at EWR) when connecting? My connecting time would be around 2 hours 45 minutes, so not very short, but I prefer to wait in a lounge, rather than in the security line.

Also: if my plane should arrive at terminal A, would it be better to take the shuttle from A via C to B, or would this add on so much shuttle/ shuttle waiting time, that walking between terminals/ taking the AirTrain would be better?

Nobody knows how the situation would be in May 2022.
Currently the airside terminal shuttle at EWR is not working and there is no 100% confirmation that it would operate in May 2022.

However, if it's running you should be able to take the airside terminal shuttle from Terminal A or C to Terminal B without re-clearing security at Terminal B. If you use the AirTrain, you would need to reclear security at Terminal B.

If you ask the same question closer to your departure date, you would get a more accurate answer depending on the situation at that time.

Thank you for your reply, which didn't quite answer my query. I thought that I was clear, with the headline to my question, that I didn't ask whether the shuttle actually will operate in May 2022 - that is a question where any answer would be totally speculative at this time.

My questions concern the normal operations of the shuttle, when it actually is working. I have a vague recollection that Terminal B has more than one security check points - one for international and one for domestic flights. If that is the case, is the deposit point for the shuttle beyond the international security check point? Also - again assuming normal operations at EWR-if my connecting flight arrives in A, and the shuttle is running, would I still be better off taking the shuttle via C, or would that add so much time, that a landside transfer, going through B security is better?

My questions concern the normal operations of the shuttle, when it actually is working. I have a vague recollection that Terminal B has more than one security check points - one for international and one for domestic flights. Terminal B has three concourses and each three concourse has its own security concourse. They are defined as B1, B2, B3. There isn't any international/domestic differentiation; however, mostly B1 is used by US carriers and B2 & B3 are used by international airlines. SK operates from Concourse B3. If you go landside, you would need to use the security checkpoint for concourse B3. As you mentioned in your first post, the lines might be long depending on the number of flights operating at that time. I had conflicting experiences departing out of EWR at the evening peak, on some occasions I waited more than 15 minutes at the security checkpoint in the priority lane, sometimes the checkpoint was totally empty with only 1-2 passengers in front of me.

If we look at pre-COVID operations;

If you land at Terminal A2, which wouldn't be the case unless your flight is operated by United Express, you could ask the shuttle driver kindly to leave you at Terminal B Concourse 3. There is no need to go back to Terminal C and take the shuttle again to Terminal B. To clarify, there is only one shuttle and Terminal B is a stop that only passengers are dropped upon request and yes, you would be dropped to the concourse where SK flights depart. As the security lines might be unpredictable at EWR, if I were you I would have taken the shuttle option if we assume that travel be back in pre-COVID levels at that time with the same amount of departures from Terminal B3, although security might be also empty in your favor. That's why I advised you to ask your question back in the upcoming months.

Also another reminder that Terminal A is planned to close at the end of the year and operations would be shifted to the brand new Terminal One. No information yet, about the closing date of Terminal A and no information regarding the logistics of the shuttle from the new United Express gates from Terminal One to Terminal B or C.

So I just read upthread the UA C-to-B shuttle is not running. I don't see that on the UA site. Can someone please point me there? I see language about exit doors, but don't know if that would include the bus.

I have a 1:10 D/I connection on 2 tickets. It's legal, but now I'm worried I'm in trouble even with precheck. I'll have a luggage thru check.

Only other option is to book another carrier that lands an hour earlier at A, grab bag and then airtrain to B.

MCT (mincomnecttime) is just the airline's acceptance of risk (if something happens that causes you to misconnect, they will incur the costs of rebooking you on future flight (and potentially leaving your original seat empty, their risk/loss)

Having two tickets means you don't have a connection. Doesn't matter whether you legally meet the MCT, you miss second flight, airline doesn't have to rebook you

Would rather have a larger gap for separate tickets, especially for an intl flight. United had an unofficial flat tire rule, but do you really want to count on it? It's ymmv pre-covid, unknown postcovid, and You may not be able to call/contact them if you're stuck in the air without wifi

you could try your luck at sdc (same day change) on either flights

To interline the bags between two separate tickets you need to meet the MCT

General widsom of FT is on separate tickets, one needs to be well above the MCT as the risk is on you, not the airlines. On a UA-UA situation, UA will help out but you will be serviced after all confirmed passenger, expecially like a standby. Not the best way to do a TATL

If UA to partner situation, you could be in a real bind

I'm aware. I meet the MCT. The itinerary can be booked as one ticket, it just happens to be booked as two.

Doesn't matter. I'm trying to book on B6 instead, but their technology has .... the bed tonight.

is jetblue.com down?

That will introduce a new problem, no bag interline agreement
