United Airlines operates an "air side" shuttle bus between Terminals A and C from 4:00AM to 12:00AM (midnight). In addition, United also operates a shuttle bus connecting Terminals A and C to terminal B (pier 3, used by Star Alliance carriers) from 1:00PM to 11:00PM, but not in the opposite direction (shuttle does not board at Terminal B). The shuttle bus is available at gate A28 and C70 as illustrated in the image above. The shuttle drops off passengers at the terminal B through the service entry, that requires walking up 2 flights of stairs - there is no elevator. Only the front bus doors will open for alighting at terminal B.This service is free and you will not have to go through TSA security again. Please note this shuttle is operated at the sole responsibility of United Airlines and is subject to modification at their discretion.

I can’t really add to what others have said. It is down to your risk aversion and attitude to having to sit out a wait to a rebooked flight. 90 minutes is doable, but add weather and it all goes a pear-shaped. 3/3 of my last flights through EWR have been delayed by weather.

If your 1st flight is on time, no problem to connect at EWR in 90 minutes. Taking the UAX flight gives you more cushion, but typically UAX flights are less reliable than mainline. And EWR can go sideways pretty quickly with the slightest weather.
I would probably go with the 3 hour UAX, knowing the 90 minute mainline flight could be the backup if things go wrong.

If you get to EWR early, you have access to Polaris Lounge (depending on flight destination), so decent place to either relax or get some work done prior to Intl flight.

Thanks all. This is an anniversary trip of a lifetime, and there aren't any good backup options from EWR to VCE. The earlier flight it is. It's an E170/5, so not so bad. Would be first int'l trip on UA; been locked into AA forever, but with only 20 J, the price differntial is enormous.

I think you are making the correct choice. Hopefully, all goes well and you have 3 hours in the Polaris Lounge, which is not a bad place to get into vacation mode.

Agree. It gets quite full in the early evening so have your dinner early, then sit at the bar or have a shower in preparation for your flight. That way you can get to sleep straight away and not have to worry about the mediocre onboard food.

OK, so can't quite believe the situation that is occurring now... Aunt is at the airport, flight is still showing as on time but the departure time has been changed from 3:43 to 3:55, with the arrival shifted (as per the EWR website) by 5 minutes... Now, that technically is putting her in an illegal connection situation, but the gate agents are refusing to reroute her... Anybody have any idea what can be done?

There's little that can be done, especially now. Connection legality takes delays into account, so the fact that the flight is delayed doesn't automatically make it illegal. Did she provide a suggested alternative to the gate agent?

My advice is for her to hurry as much as possible... and start looking for other options to get to ABJ. Customer service in EWR will rebook her if she's not able to make it through customs and immigration in time, which seems likely.

Incidentally, the flight is now listed as 19 minutes delayed, but they'll provide an updated arrival once they've actually filed a flight plan and gotten departure clearance at YQB.

I also see some EWR-MAD/LIS-CMN-ABJ, although perhaps not the greatest option. Trying to get OALed to JFK could be risky.. depends a lot on the preferences of the pax.

There appear to be a couple of seats on Air France, leaving JFK at 11:55 PM, connecting through CDG, and arriving into ABJ at 8:05 PM tomorrow. Convincing UA to rebook on AF could be a challenge, but it's worth asking about.

Well, UA999 is currently taxiing and I haven't gotten a panicked message from AuntTwick, so I'm going to assume she made the flight.

It was delayed leaving the gate, which gave her a fighting chance.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions and info - and yes, when AuntTwick gets back, we'll have a little discussion on how to book a flight that won't cause her and her immediate family a day full of heart palpitations...

UA999 is delayed? I am shocked!

I went through a nightmare scenario with UA999 this past summer. Ended up in BOS instead in the middle of the night...

EWR connection time

I’m booked on a flight from IAD to EWR and then EWR to BQN. Connection time is 55 mins. It must be a legal connection since UA sold me the ticket. But it gives me some concern because flights into EWR are often delayed and service to BQN not frequent.

Would you be concerned about this? If United will permit it, I could switch to an earlier flight from DCA to EWR, which would make the connection about two hours and 10 minutes. (It looks like there is no first class on the DCA-EWR flight, but that doesn’t matter to me as much as making the connection)

I would appreciate any advice.

These things are always hard to tell. Is it a winter flight? I tend to prefer too much over too little connection time, so personally, if United lets you switch to the DCA flight, I'd take it. Class of service doesn't really matter on a flight that short (to me).
