UA website pin vs password, forced PIN choice
Feel free to nudge me elsewhere if this has been discussed.
Called to get my GPUs (SWUs) extended (tried for January, ended up with December 31, and am now trying to play roulette to use them).
While on the phone, the agent says "You haven't selected a PIN. You need to pick one. Shall I do that now?"
She also made me tell her my (now changed) password before working on my issue.
I said, well, no, I don't want a 4 digit pin usable on the web site, I prefer a password for security. "Well, you have to select a PIN for when you call us to verify identity."
Will it only work when I call, or online too? "It will only be for calling, not the web site. For the web site, your password will work."
She was pretty insistent, so I let her because it was holding up my real issue.
Of course, now I can log in using my PIN or my password.
What's the point of both a PIN and a password? And why would the less secure method be forced? I get that pmCO had PINs and pmUA had passwords (my password ported properly to new website). Is there some other way to manage identify verification with them beyond sharing my password or using a 4 digit PIN?

more fare class discrepancies
Building itin SMF-IAD. Website only offered FC (P) outbound at $735 OneWay. Yet the seat map showed plenty E+. Re-booked going THRU IAD to alternate endpoints (chose GSO for the test), website offered E+ and the *RT* was under $700. Called, agent could only see the FC choice when the endpoint was set as IAD. Orbitz offered the same fare amount (>$700), but for an E+ seat. Crazy times.

a question, an observation, and a rant
1. I booked a 2-pax RT with me (1K) and a GM on one PNR. On the outbound I split the PNR in order to apply for 2 upgrades (we both failed). I selected auto check-in for the return. Is the system smart enough to know that the GM is my companion even though we're now on separate PNRs?
2. Flying BTV-ORD yesterday, the CR7 was oversold by 6. It took the GoJet agent a whole hour to find 5 VDB; he ended up doing 1 IDB. Not sure how much to attribute to a) SHARES, b) agent incompetence (he was really bad at making announcements about what was going on), or c) UA and UX not talking to each other (he had to spend a long time on the phone to get authority to increase the VDB offer).
Luckily the connecting ORD-SFO was delayed 1.5 hours, which brings me to...
3. Nothing to do with SHARES, but: No dinner service in F on a 7.40 pm ORD-SFO flight??? Really???? (Also, was there supposed to be a cookie? We didn't get any.)

Just returned from a flight where the system split our PNR , I presume for upgrade reasons, and at check in my daughter was told she had to pay for her bags.

After 30 minutes on hold on the Premier service line about a lost upgrade, hearing over and over and over again that they are investing a half a billion in equipment improvements and are testing bio-fuels, I have come to believe that everything is hard for this airline. They did put me out of my misery by hanging up on me though, so have to appreciate that.

Just ended up with my first mileage posting error. LAX-PHL is apparently 500 miles. Though while the redeemable miles did not post correctly the elite qualifying did.

Having the same issue from the inaugural RDU-SFO service.
I was given the correct number of EQMs, but the RDMs are wrong.
