New route: ORD-SRQ (Sarasota, FL) begins 11/4/12

http://ir.unitedcontinentalholdings....025&highlight=

United Airlines today announced plans to launch daily nonstop service between its hub at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Sarasota, Fla. (SRQ) effective Nov. 4, 2012.

The once-daily service will operate using Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 154 seats -- 16 in United First, 48 in Economy Plus and 90 in Economy.
Let the expansion begin!

That's certainly an interesting one. I would not have expected that route.

Any idea on the schedule?

Would have come in much more handy for me in a previous life, BUT would love to see UA fly more into the south so I don't have to fly US scareways. I occasionally have to go into Georgia...and UA not very helpful there...

Glad to see the new service is mainline, instead of the usual CRJ200 or E145. ^

The nice part of this is that UA didn't serve SRQ before the merger, and CO dropped service a few years ago (there used to be daily EWR-SRQ service and a seasonal CLE-SRQ).

I wonder if FL dropping service to SRQ had anything to do with UA starting this route. I think AA dropped SRQ a while back as well.

I have been in despair since September 2nd of 2008

I am SRQ based (much of the time) & was on the

last flight out when they pulled out back then

CO has been paying rent here all along so I was

ever hopeful that this UACO disaster might just

decide to try us again (don't know for how long)

Don't care where I have to go 1st but just as

long as I don't have to drive to TPA or fly brand X

This is the 1st news in the plus column so far

They had service there for many years long ago when

we also had several other legacy carriers as well

When I relocated to Sarasota in 72 we had only

Eastern to ATL & National to IDL until PanAm bought

National & pulled out leaving us with only EA for years

Then slowly in the 70s & 80s we picked up several

others including NW DL UA AA PE XV ATA & a couple

other small commuters

Now we are left with a newer poorly designed main

terminal run by a useless Freddy Piccolo & poor service

Same aircraft configuration as HKG-SIN right? Or is this one even better?

Paging SRQ Guy...

^ ^ ^ No more connecting through CLT to stay on *A, or driving from TPA.

It's not too surprising if you think about it. WN is pulling out of the market and SRQ is a huge magnet for Midwestern retirees.

All around good news

For me it's losing my Nathan's hot dogs in ATL or not flying the skyway

I won't use USeless unless Greyhound doesn't go there

Oh goody Chicago in the winter (still beats the alternatives)

For the last part of their SRQ service we had

Gulfstream as CO Express & then Cape Air as CO Connector

Both service was to connect through TPA onto full size

Gulfstream operated pressurized Saab 19s & Cape Air used

Cessna 402s where I always sat up front in the 2nd seat

In the 90s, CO ran IAH-SRQ and seasonal DEN-SRQ. And UA had SRQ service as well, I think via MCO.

In 1990 or 1991 I flew ORD-MCO on a D10 and MCO-SRQ on a 722 and back on an award in F - that was back when there was a plexiglass (or similar) window in the bulkhead between the first row of F and the boarding door.
