{UA} we’ve decided to discontinue the program as of April 23, 2019.

5 April 2018 -- UA started posting an "expiration date", appears to be at least 18 months after most recent activity (some are longer for unknown reasons)
also states
Some of your United®TravelBank Cash may expire on a different date than what’s displayed here. Please check your balance details for a complete history of your United®TravelBank Cash transactions and the expiration date for each amount.
Expiration had previously been in the T&Cs for some time (2 years of inactivity? but now is 18 months) and had stated an ETC would be issued if the funds did timeout. Unclear if that still applies.

The Gift Registry has been disabled since Fall 2017 (Sept?) (appears this may be related to a tax issue?)
As of 5 May 2018, it still states
We're sorry, our gift registry page is currently unavailable for maintenance. You can still use the funds from your gift registry to book travel during this time, but you will not be able to receive contributions or update your registry details. We expect the page to be up and running again in early 2018.
Around Sept 2018, wording changed to

Hello All,

I am new to united, but I have a couple hundred in my TravelBank since I needed to use up perks from different cards to get reimbursed for travel, so I sent myself a couple hundred from different cards. Now I have the money sitting on the account and not sure what to do with it. I do not travel much, but when I do, it was usually via JetBlue and nowhere crazy. Just wondering if I can use the money on the TravelBank for giftcards, or perhaps even hotel stays instead of flights?

hindsight is 20/20, I guess, but definitely unwise to put money in the travel bank without knowing the details, especially if you don't travel much, and especially if when you do, it's with another carrier.

Travelbank funds can only only be used to book tickets through United.com. And while I've never seen terms that specifically call this out, the web site will only let you use it on flights operated by UA/UAX - I.e no codeshares or flights operated by partners (though I was able to do this with once with an agent, but took a lot of time/persistence - multiple phone calls and about a week from start to finish, so i don't recommend trying this).

The good news is that you should have time to figure out how to use it - Better to read the terms to confirm, but travelbank finds, IIRC, stay in that account. If there are two years of inactivity (it might be 1, but pretty sure it's two) then they take the amount and send it to you as an ETC - basically a voucher that you will have 1 year to use - valid again on new tickets only operated by UA/IAX.

Got it!
Thanks
I agree with what you said, but it was either that or loosing out on the money completely before closing the cards lol so I figured this was one way of not loosing it.

Maybe this question has already been asked before, but I couldn't find an answer on the United website.

Do you earn the $5 credit when booking an award ticket? My guess would be not, but there doesn't seem to be anything definitive on the united site.

Some received and some have not. I received $5 credit each time so far.

I have never received my credit on an award booking automatically. I have always had to email in after the fact & eventually received the credit. I used to get the credit a few days after emailing in. Lately I have had to email in 2-3 times over several weeks until they eventually posted it.

Last travel bank credit received on an award ticket was $15 for 3 of us on the same PNR. I took 3 emails over a few weeks to finally get it posted.

Don't have to be member at time of travel

I've been wondering this for years and the FAQ are silent but I clicked autorenew when I joined and there's no unautorenew option (classic .bomb).

Anyways, this August I was told that my payment method had expired (it hadn't) so I decided to let my membership lapse for a few weeks. Flew an old itin and got my 5 bucks! Reupped before booking any more tickets.

Nice way to stretch out your membership if you don't book often or are exceedingly cheap (both of which apply to me).

Can United TravelBank be used to fly to Asia ?

I'm looking to fly from the West coast to Vietnam again (SFO-SGN).
I have $570 in United TravelBank .

There are several flights on StarAlliance for this destination, for example on Eva Air, but all with 1 stop (no nonstop US / Vietnam flights exist).

Strangely, those Eva Air flights can't even be booked for cash on United.com, let alone with miles or Travelbank.

Is there any way to use my Travelbank for this trip, or am I SOL ?

To answer the subject, yes, you can generally use travelbank funds to fly to Asia.

To answer the body, UA is not a general travel agent. They'll sell some flights on other carriers, particularly those they have immunized JVs with, but not any arbitrary *A or IATA carrier flight.

TravelBank won't show up as an option if any of the flights are operated by a partner, even though Travelbank terms don't specifically exclude them like for ETCs. The 'UA Payment Options' which it falls under (along with ETC, gift certificates, etc) won't show as available, saying something like 'your flight selection prevent you from using United payment options'. I once was able to get a phone agent to apply TravelBank funds to an itinerary with an ANA TPAC, but it took about a week and multiple calls to find an agent who would take the effort to do it, and even it took her time - she told me she would call me back and it was at least a couple of hours. I don't suggest trying it.

But if you're flying with only UAX/UA metal on the itinerary to Asia, then of course, you can use TravelBank funds.

Thanks. Unfortunately, United does not have any flights to Vietnam on their own planes, so using UA metal in this case isn't possible. I could potentially use Travelbank to book United flights to another city (like Hong Kong), and then book separate flights from/to Vietnam. May consider that next time.
For now, I booked our flights on Eva using my CSR at 1.5cpp for my ticket, and the miles on Arrival + for my husband.

Actuall the T&Cs do state (it is buried)
27. TravelBank Cash is valid for air travel purchases on United and United Express® flights and as otherwise permitted by United.
which pretty much means no partner flights -- sounds like you got an "one time exception"

For the last two weeks I've been getting this message on my Account page:

We’re sorry, our gift registry page is currently unavailable for maintenance. You can still use the funds from your gift registry to book travel during this time, but you will not be able to receive contributions or update your registry details. Please check back at a later date.
Is this specific to me or are other people seeing this too?
