Unusually LOW (?) Upgrade Fee

On 2/2, I was offered an opportunity to upgrade my EWR-MIA flight for $49. I elected not too - but I thought that the fee was exceptionally low.

Then yesterday I was offered IAH-LAX at $459.

I can see the $459 - but $49 for the other upgrade. Does that seem logical and way too LOW? At that cost, I will never get any UDUs!

Search TOD / Tens of Dollars - and yes, it is likely low

What was your fare basis for MIA?

I'm surprised they showed you the offer as an elite. Normally they're good at only showing the kettles these offers while elites wonder why their upgrades haven't cleared.

What did the upgrade list look like? Were you somehow the only person on it? (UA Insider has said these lowball offers should not happen when elites are on the upgrade list , but it's possible that it means "no one but you" on the upgrade list.)

Are the only two categories of fliers kettles or elites? This year I no longer happen to be elite, but I don't consider myself a kettle (as you call them, or us) either.

Another term that has been used is kayaker -- someone focuses on price and not loyalty to a single airline / alliance. Seems to those the fly semi-regularily but not enough or have chosen not to focus on elite status.

Yes, that does seem to be the plan!

Or to put it another way, all flyers are equal, but some are more equal than others.
