Offer to buy-up from 2012 Plat to 2012 1K

I had 88k EQM in 2011. At mileageplusmergerupdates.com I clicked on link to get a "personalized preview" of my 2012 status, which was confirmed as Platinum and then was given an offer -- "You can Still Reach 1k Status" -- all it requires to reach 1K is purchasing the additional 12k EQM -- and for a mere $2,537! Maybe it's a deal in disguise, as purchasing 1k or 2k EQM's costs $848, so maybe I should go for this! LOL

Looks like about 20 cpm. Which is really high, but it is retroactive. The best we saw was about 7 cpm in September/October.

I'm just surprised they would offer this for being as much as 12k EQMs off. What's the threshold - have any other Plats gotten this offer? I could see a reasonable offering for maybe less than 5k EQMs to go (in which case maybe the argument could also be made for a goodwill type of deal). The new COUA will sell anything, I guess.

The offers appears to be targeted to those with 85k EQMs or higher as one can select an option to purchase (in 1000 EQM increments) as many as 15k EQM for $2,900+

My bet is this offer appears for anyone who has 85k+ EQM and who confirms their status at mileageplusmergerupdates.com and then clicks the link offering 1K Status

Sigh--though PMUA has in the past offered retroactive buy-ups to 1K, many more were the years where they protected 1K by specifically excluding it from such offers. You could buy up if short of 2P or 1P, but not to 1K.

Why am I not surprised that the current UA is not only allowing but promoting buying up to 1K?

They're offering my wife the opportunity to buy up to Silver (3k/3eqs) for $498, so it's not limited to those over 85k. It looks like it's for anyone that is within 15k/15eqs of any tier.

For what it's worth, I ended the year with 80,080 EQMs and do not have the offer.

I'm dropping from 1K to 2P (39K EQM) for 2012. Got an offer to buy up to 1P for a mere $1800 for 11K EQMs. No thanks.

For those considering it, CC eqm may not have posted yet. You also may want to wait until Feb 28 to delay posting of SWU's.

It's pathetic - I am so surprised at the "new" United. I have been 1K for fifteen years straight and there were times I barely made it. 15,000 miles is three roundtrips to Europe from the US! So why bother with the new 75,000 mile threshhold? It makes no sense.

I can confirm it appears for other status levels as well. My DEQM segments haven't posted yet, so I'm just showing as a general member, so it's offering me a buy-up for 2P.

Since our last weekly update, your 2011 balance is 23258 EQM and 13.0 EQS/EQP. You need an additional 2,000 EQM or 2 EQS/EQP to achieve 2012 Premier Silver status.
Prices are:
1k/1 eqs=199
2k/2eqs =348
3k/3 is 498
4k/4=647
5k/5=796
6k/6=945
7k/7=1095
8k/8=1244
9k/9=1393
10k/10=1542
11k/11=1692
12k/12=1841
13k/13=1990
14k/14=2139
15k/15=2289
