The paint job on this airplane will be unique in the fleet. You will have to wait for someone to catch it at an airport with a camera in hand to see what it looks like.

Details please! Would be great if this became a 2nd retrojet (though highly doubtful of course). Maybe the 80s tricolor version.

+1

I wouldn't mind another Friendship, 747 Friendship would look way better than A320 Friendship

Was told by a senior pilot working the iPad EFB project that there's 3 more coming back from the desert for 2012. Airfleets says there's 6 additional still stored.

Is the Flightaware listing of the actual flown routing accurate postflight? If so, anyone else notice how far off the great circle ZBAA-KSFO the UAL8298 flight was? What's that all about?? An intense desire to consume more Jet A??

They get their data from a variety of places, but I presume those points are accurate. Probably winds make the difference from GC routing. Further, but faster.

That would be pretty wild. I know they expect international capacity to go up slightly in 2012, but 4 additional 744s would be a bit much.

If it is true then how do you explain one just went out of service just last month ! (8473, the one on display during UA fleet week in 2010)

Now the UA active 744 fleet down to 23 from 24 !

To the 6 that are stored, only 4 can bring out in reality, 1 just stored since last month so it is out of the question, 1 already scrapped (8185), the 4 left are 8193, 8195, 8196, and 8198

Interestingly, one of the FAs on UA 858 today told me that the 747 is returning to PVG-SFO in a couple months. Hopefully this is signaled by the return of the remaining 744s to the fleet and hopefully they will get the ITPE treatment.

The TPAC positions for UAL8298 appear correct; it's not uncommon to take the southerly due east routings for better winds.

Nothing to do with stored 744s returning to service. It's a standard seasonal change -- the 744 currently on SFO -- LHR v v goes away, and SFO -- PVG gets the 744 back.

SFO -- LHR is 2x daily 777 in summer.
