Booked in October, C fare
1/7 SFO-PVG cleared at booking
1/14 PVG-SFO cleared at gate (only 1 seat left in F). After scribbling my new seat on the boarding pass, the gate agent asked me for my business card so they could solicit a testimonial. (I don't carry them.)

Feb 28, MCO->EWR->LIM, used SWU to upgrade my 4YO son. This is the CO SWU that works on any fare. Have a second CO SWU that expires Feb 29, and I needed to upgrade myself on the same route, but no more inventory available for upgrade EWR->LIM. So I ended up applying the expiring SWU MCO->EWR, and buying C EWR->LIM outright. Sure, the SWU might have cleared for that leg, but couldn't risk it.

Coming back, I just used miles + co-pay (25K miles each, $125). The W fare was nearly $400 more per person, so miles seemed like a much better deal. The fact that those new SWUs are fare-restricted is a huge devaluation...

Please Give More Details!!

To all, it would be helpful if you would state the lowest fare you could have booked, and the resultintg fare (usually W) you actually did book.

I'm looking at CLE-GRU in MArch. Lowest S fare is $1200, but W fare is $2100. I know this is not a "success" story, but the requested details would be valuable to me, knowing how much others are paying to get the chance of using a SWU.

You have to book at least a W fare to play the SWU lotto.

Last year I searched on .bomb and found a $900 net flight SFO-BKK but had to fork over a little over $900 more to make it W fare and use my SWU.

Isn't all of this much better served by utilizing UDUstats.com?

To me, pages of threads don't help versus hard statistics.

Unless our OP is agreeing (like in other threads like Marriott meetups) to consolidate here or populate on udustats..

Booked SIN-NRT-LAX-SAT-SFO-NRT-SIN in J outbound and C return (domestic legs booked in A)
Date issued: 13th Jan, amended booking 20 Jan
Date of departure: 23 Jan
Date of return: 27th Jan

Applied SWU's as soon as TA ticketed. SIN-NRT-LAX cleared at ticketing
SFO-NRT: cleared one week out
NRT-SIN: cleared at gate

(Edit: Did a date change from Sun 22 to Mon 23 and slight route change, and there was plenty of NF (X) inventory available on the SIN-NRT and then NRT-LAX legs. Return flights from SFO look extremely busy...

(2nd endit: SIN-NRT outbound on the 23rd of Jan was cancelled. No reason given. We were offloaded onto NH and had a pleasant ride in J up to NRT, where we connected with our LAX flight. Plenty of people weren't so lucky and were either not able to be accommodated or down graded from paid F/C to Y)
