1K Worth It for $1500?

2011 is a slow travel year for me. It looks like I will end up with 85K miles by year end which is normally enough to get me top level with Continental. Looks like 85K isn't going to cut it for the 2011 new program.

I estimated that I might need to spend about $1500 to get the additional 15K miles to move me from Platinum to 1K. Is it worth it to try to move up to 1K?

Next year I have many domestic travel out of MCI connecting to CO/UA hubs. I have a planned Asia trip and another 2 Europe trips.

There is no universal answer to your question. It depends on your travel plans for 2012 and what different benefits are worth to you -- the subject can be debated endlessly and has

Get Thee to the Mileage Running topics on FT.

If you're based out of ORD, you might be able to cash in on the UA Double EQM promotion. Even with the minimum W fare, 15K miles should fall well below $1,000 if you're flexable and do it right.

If you're planning on flying UACO for your Asia/Europe trips next year, the 6 x SWU might come in handy (search for other topics for SWU use/success/failure).

In the end, it's your money. Read up on how the UACO program will change in 2012 (fare basis/status/buy ups/upgrade instruments). Decide what's best for you.

See you in the air.
