Just premier member (silver or above) or any United credit card holder (officially a benefit of explorer, club, business, etc. and unofficially United gateway as well)

So can I just buy an economy ticket and then call an agent and request the upgrade?
A bit of urgency, I just bought a cash bz ticket and I sure would prefer getting the upgrade?

No
JN - Elite/CC Everyday Business or 2-cabin First Award
is a mileage award not a mileage upgrade.

So yes for a humongous miles you can book a JN standard mileage award. But it is not an upgrade for an economy ticket.

Upgrade inventory and Mileage Awards are separate items / inventory.

I'm guessing you have been confused by the bad information on that poorly done other site. Yet another reason to delete that bookmark.

This may be a naive question.

I see talk about booking/upgrading or changing to different flight 'types' or classes signified by letters.
Is there a guide to what they mean?
And can you change to a different 'class' after booking? (And is it beneficial?)
I'm lost, sorry.

Y is economy. PE (or PP specifically for United) is premium economy. J is business. There is a glossary somewhere but I can never find it.

When you upgrade you are changing to a higher class of service. There are a few different ways to upgrade. You may get an offer to pay cash for an upgrade that's immediately confirmed. You can pay miles + copay (cash) to upgrade, but if there isn't upgrade space available they will waitlist it and it may or may not clear. With no status, it's less likely to clear (people with status will be ahead of you on the waitlist) If it doesn't clear you will be fully refunded, but you end up flying in your originally purchased class of service, so you have to be ok with that. If you absolutely must fly business class, you should either buy business class (expensive!) or look for flights where upgrade space is available, buy the tickets, and upgrade immediately (possibly cheaper, but can be difficult to find)

For longer flights, PE can be affordable and is a lot more comfortable than economy; it may be a good middle ground

You can change to a higher fare class thru a process called up-faring. Easiest to do this with an agent and more $$$.
Beneficial -- depends on what the objective is. For upgrades remember status is the 1st factor

Would require significant changes
N is UA domestic basic economy
would reshuffle the economy fare classes
The GEN system was in place when UA did OAR, that would have been the time to do that alignment. Why did not UA do it than, ????

Yeah, drugs R bad, but it doesn't mean that can't come to their senses one day and fix it....just hoping

This seems like a bit more than maintenance if it is scheduled for 28 days - maybe we get some "Improvements" and not the kind that suck

It's really only the LH Group and NH. Rest of *A and UA partners are all over the map with PE fare classes (eg. AC is O/E/A and NZ is U/E/O/A).
