Elite status on code share flights resulting in upgrades

I'm curious how this works. I'm based in CLT (USAir hub), but would see status on United as a more valuable one to have. A lot of flights from CLT fly USAir metal, but are sold as either USAir or United (Same flight). If I were to obtain status on United would I get upgraded on a United (USAir Metal) flight?

The metal is all that matters for upgrades like this. If you want upgrades on flights operated by US you’ll need status with US.

IAHRyan is right. Upgrades generally only happen for elites in the program of the airline metal being flown. One example of a rare exception to this is the Delta/Alaska airlines partnership.

Good news for the OP (NOTE my sarcasm) is that he can buy whatever preferred level he'd like!

Welcome to FT.

A UA elite will rarely, if ever, get an upgrade on US metal. The only real situation this would happen in is if a flight was overbooked in Y, and all US elites had been upgraded. Then, they would likely start looking at *G, then *S to upgrade to free up economy seats. Also, prehaps in irrops situations, where they would do the same thing if there were lots on standby because of canceled flights due to weather, etc. This would not happen very often at all.
