As is normal, I called customer service a couple of times and got totally opposite answers so I thought I would try here.
When I log on to My Account there is an option to "Transfer Flexible Premier Miles". The first question is, what is the deadline to transfer flexible premier miles into my account balance to be mixed with my earned miles for the 2012 calendar year in order to obtain gold status for 2012? Is it 12/31/2012 or is it 3/31/2013? Or some other date?
If the answer is 12/31/2012 then I have a second question. The literature for the Presidential Plus card says your miles can be used for the year they are earned plus 3 additional years. It also says they will expire 39 months after the end of the year they are earned. Why 39 months? I'm assuming it is 39 months since you are given a 3 month grace period after Jan. 1 to transfer your miles into your account for the previous year. There would be no reason to say "39 months" rather than "36 months" if the deadline for transferring miles is Dec. 31.

That is a tough one even for agents, as it's such an arcane card benefit that is rapidly disappearing.

Does anyone recall how notification was made concerning flex miles not being eligible for 1K status. I've been stockpiling miles for more than 2 years to use in 2012. Seems as if I should have been notified in writing as to such a major change in a credit card benefit. Should I be pissed at United or Chase.

I'm going from memory, but I believe it was done probably in March-ish?

How do I use my Flex PQMs?
Your Flex PQMs will be displayed on your MileagePlus account statement and may be redeemed at any time and added to your earned PQM balance to upgrade your Premier status or increase your current PQM balance. You may call the MileagePlus Service Center at 1-800-421-4655 to redeem your Flex PQMs. You have until March 31 to apply these award miles to a previous years balance. For example, a customer earned 70,000 PQMs in 2009, enough to earn Premier Gold status for the 2010 Premier year. That customer has until March 31, 2010, to apply 5,000 Flex PQMs to his or her 2009 balance to attain Premier Platinum status for 2010.

Thanks Edcho and, believe it or not, I did find that link using google before I posted. But, 2 thoughts...first it is a United German link for cards in Germany and second it is for the Business Card. Also note that the timeframe mentioned in the links is 2009-2010. A lot has changed since then.
Any documentation on a United USA website?
It's not a trivial issue. Let's say I can easily get enough PQM if my deadline is 3/31/13 whereas I will have to jump through hoops and perhaps waste some $ in order to get enough PQM by 12/31/12.
Arguing with the United CS personnel is fruitless in the base case but if the only documentation I can produce relates to a German version of the business card rather than my personal card, they will not take me seriously. The CS reps are generally convinced that the deadline is 12/31/12 and will need to see proof in the form of documentation to change their position.

I can assure you that the site is capable for transferring miles after Jan 1st-March 31st for your previous year's balance. I did it this year for last years balance (although it was just for the lifetime miles). There weren't any issues and it was pretty instant.
It might be in the pamphlets/t&c as well but i'm too lazy to dig those up.

Non-expiring Flexible Premier Qualifying Miles
In my account I have both Non-expiring Premier Qualifying Miles (earned before 1/1/12...they have no expiration date) and Expiring Premier Qualifying Miles (earned after 12/31/11...they expire 39 months after the end of the year they are earned). Later this year I would like to redeem some of the miles. I would like to redeem some of my Expiring Premier Qualifying Miles without touching the balance of my Non-expiring Premier Qualifying Miles.
When I go into my account and get the screen to transfer the miles, it asks for how many miles you want to redeem but does not show 2 buckets (non-expiring and expiring) to pick from when redeeming. So I called customer service. They said that when you redeem your miles you must always redeem the first miles placed into the account (First In, First Out). As a result, your non-expiring miles are always the first miles that get redeemed since they were the first miles into the account.
Did anyone with both a non-expiring Premier Qualifying Miles balance and an expiring Premier Qualifying Miles balance redeem Premier Qualifying Miles in 2012 and find that they were required to redeem the non-expiring miles first?

So the way I understand it:
I currently have 80k miles and 11K flex miles.
The flex miles are effectively worthless to me? since I am above 75k and below 100k?

Hmmm, well thanks for clearing that up.
It seems like they will be useless every year, since I always make it close to 100k.
What will happen if I transfer them per the website?

You might get lucky. At least one person has. But it's been made clear that FEQM do not count toward 1K. Which seems a huge waste of time to make a single exception for a benefit that isn't even available to the general public anymore. But so it is.

Well, I tried and didn't get lucky. After going through the screens, it stopped and said that while these miles don't expire, I can't apply them for status...
And I thought I had no more reasons to love United this year!
