I heard that Cuba beaches are nice.

Can I use my CR-1 to upgrade a future UA flight to HAV?

Doubtful. First of all, security concerns most likely would prevent the presence of a civilian aircraft on base. Too many tourists to point their cameras out the window and take photos of sensitive installations, equipment, personnel, etc.

Secondly, Guantanamo Naval Base is not US soil. It is a US military installation on Cuban soil. Since 1903, the territory has been leased to the USA by the Government of Cuba. The USA claims that the lease remains valid indefinitely, until BOTH countries agree to discontinue the lease. Cuba has refused to cash the rent checks, claiming that the lease is invalid.

I seriously doubt it. I think the biggest plane that goes to EYW is a CRJ. When I took CO Connection to EYW there a few years ago, it did not look like a big runway at all. A320 risks driving into the ocean on landing!

1) Can EYW handle an A320? I know they can handle FL's 717s, but what about an A320? -- Looking at the route this flight took, EYW doesn't look too far off.

2) Could NAS Guantanamo Bay have been an option, at least we would have been on "American" soil.

I lived in Miami in 2001 and 2002. Many Cubans I knew flew UA and AA charters directly to Havana to see family.

DL flies 738s to EYW ...

Track of the UA flight: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/U...00ZZ/KIAD/MUHA

I imagine AC and Copa can take good care of UA in HAV. EYW would have been too tricky.

Havana sees numerous USA-registered planes daily including up to three AA 737s and regular UA flights as well. All are charters for the ever-booming legal traffic of people between South Florida and Cuba. Ground handling facilities are well in place for Airbuses and Boeings from western carriers.
