Mine was a temporary charge (twice) and credit (twice) for $1 from Groupon. On the same night, a test charge from Google for $1, and a test charge from Yahoo Wallet for $1. All overnight as I last checked online in the evening of the 23rd. I do understand the concept of pre-authorization, but there's no way there would be that many from that many different vendors in the same 8 hour period, especially while sleeping, and not having bought anything. Better to be safe than sorry.

With the next day delivery of a new card, it's "almost" painless getting a new one. Apart from logging in everywhere and changing details of auto-pays....

This shouldn't be a problem...I don't think Chase really cares what other cards you have with them. I got the fee waiver on the PP card when I already had the (old) UA Club Visa card.

Talking Platinum to 1k

My experience has been a little different than that suggested by others, so I've decided to register (as opposed to just lurk) with my experience...

I am a PP cardholder. High spender (50k to 100k per month). Have had the card since early in 2011.

My plan was to build FEQM in 2011, transfer them on Jan 1, 2012, and then fly the extra 25k to get to 1k.

I transferred 75k FEQM on Jan 5, 2012. I flew about 20k miles through April 12th, but earned about 25,040k EQM with fare and class of service bonus.

Although it took a call as soon as the additional EQMs were posted to put me over 100k, the agent put me on hold for a few minutes then came back and told me that my status had been upgraded to 1k.

MY ONLY REASON for considering this card was the FEQM. I was really pissed at CO and AMEX for ending their partnership and Gold Elite status for the Amex Centurion card holders.

As it turns out, it has been vastly superior in benefits to the AMEX Centurion at a fraction of the cost.

Don't get me wrong - i would NEVER drop my Centurion card, but Amex has lost a significant amount of spend that now goes to Chase.

HOWEVER, I was also told by an agent that when transferring FEQM to your status, you can only transfer FEQMs to the point that you get a total of 75k. From the 75k point, you must actually fly to get to 1k.

I do hope that this experience helps those in a similar situation.

you lucked out (one time exception? -- maybe due to your heavy spend)

the stated policy is 1K status can not be obtained with any use of FEQMs -- and this has been confirmed by UA reps on FT.

I think people here would be interested in seeing empirically how this works. If anyone wants to volunteer to put 375K on their PPlus card and then fly another 25k go for it!

That's my understanding when I talked to them, as well. Makes sense from their perspective, as otherwise you could just use the FEQMs for 51K-64K or whatever and the 75K restriction would be irrelevant.

I am new to the PP card. Unfortunately, i signed up about 3 weeks before the united club card came out, so i couldn't take advantage of the first year free (any thoughts on if i can get the first year fee waived because of it?).

My question is about FEQMs. Can I still accrue them or is that now over? Is there anything that I am getting from the PP card that is better than the United Club Card?

thanks for the help!

Done that - please see this thread

So if I get to PP with even NO flying with 75k flex EQMs, I am spending (by not getting the 50% bonus with the Club card) 187.5k miles for it for 2 years of status.
or at 2 cpm, $3750 gives me 2 years of Plat on UA.

FEQMs still exist and PPMC is the only card that has them.

Supposedly FEQMs earned after Jan. 2012 will expire (after 39 months or something like that), but they still exist.

But it's not likely they will exist for long. The sunsetting of new FEQM-earning credit cards is a clear prelude to ending the whole program. So, there won't be a lot of XFEQMs to worry about, and soon enough their scant number will be gone and forgotten. But, not, one supposes, the NXFEQMs, assuming UA's Perry Masons cannot find some way to expire something that cannot expire.

RNE, musing, I may hold on to my NXFEQMs for decades to surprise and regale young MP members with their existence, like Old Red, the codger in my youth, who had a jar of buffalo nickels. A buffalo on a nickel? Imagine that!

P.S. Decades from now there won't be any nickles at all. Metal money? Imagine that!

My compromised number in December happened with someone either stealing the number or randomly hitting it; charges for escort services, blue pills, etc. all in England hit on the same day and Chase called asking if I'd been to England. Of course I hadn't and still had the card plastic even. They overnighted a new card with a new number--still CO branded since this was December.

The only other time I lost a card it was with some other card about 6 years ago and I misplaced the card, probably at a restaurant, and called it in before any bad transactions could happen. The restaurant didn't have the card--so either a customer or server had it, or it got swept up in the trash or something. Funny that the fraudulent transactions were the time that I didn't lose a card.

I believe the presidents plus card waives the $75 close in fee. Can someone confirm this? I recently (last week) upgraded my card to the presidents plus and I am still being charged the fee.

I don't think it waives the close in booking fee, sorry. I could be wrong, but I've never read about that feature.

The united club card certainly waives it. I remember seeing the presidents plus card does too.

There are some great new Card benefits and some changes to existing benefits. Here’s an overview:

New benefits
  • Book reward seats close to your departure date without a fee. Spur-of-the-moment travel plans? No problem. Effective sometime in Q1 2012, we’ll waive the fee for booking reward tickets 21 days or less prior to departure. This benefit is reserved only for Cardmembers and certain Elite levels.
