How do I upgrade Sponsor a Continental Operated flight in advance? (UA1K)

I am trying to sponsor a friends upgrade and she is flying on a CO flight with a UA flight number. Is there a way i can sponsor the upgrade for her? I am a UA 1K and have SWUs and CR1s

Any ideas will help.

Thanks
Ben

If it is CO metal then you can use CO miles, CO SWUs or CO CR1s. The CO CR1s do not exist yet so that's out. As a 1K you probably do not have any CO SWUs so unless you have a very generous friend that's probably out, too. That leaves you with the miles option.

Link your CO/UA accounts, transfer the miles over and request the upgrade. That's pretty much the only option you've got right now.

Later in the summer (at a point in time yet to be officially marked) the SWUs and CR1s will have reciprocity but until then it is miles only.

Any recent news on this front? I want to use a UA CR1 to upgrade a CO flight, but I can't seem to do it online. Still not possible?

My understanding is that you can now call UA and ask them to transfer the CR1 to CO and then redeem it from your OnePass account.

Ah, thanks. How does one determine if there is confirmable upgrade space on a CO flight? Award search method on UA doesn't show that info for CO flights.

Do a dummy search for your flight, click "Fare Class" and you can see the "Expert Mode." Look for the R bucket availability.

If you are using Chrome, Opera or Firefox with the Grease Monkey add-in also consider grabbing the script from here. It will have all the fare bucket lists expanded and will highlight the award buckets for quickly identifying if the seats are there.

It can be done but just not on line (yet). You need to call UA. (see here) and I was able to use my CR1's to sponsor goalie-parents

Has anyone had any luck sponsoring a CO flight using a UA SWU?

Many folks have. It requires calling in and a W fare or higher but otherwise shouldn't be too hard.
