Does anyone have any experience of this United app or is there something better out there? Does this Continental on work for United too ?

I don't have an Android, but I can offer this much. I have an iPhone and the Continental app, which looks like it's identical to the one in your link, and as a PMUA flyer, you can't do too much with it, but you can at least get flight alerts for UA flights at the moment.

I think the only official Android app is the Continental one. I downloaded mine from Android Market. It works pretty slick, few updates I'd like to see.
The one you referenced looks like it is basically another way to use m.united.com, if that's the case might as well just use a bookmark and your mobile browser.

pda.continental.com is your friend
I was on a mileage run yesterday and it looked like I would be upgraded on only 2 of 4 segments. Landed at IAH and checked the PDA flight upgrade status list of my Y connection and saw:
Booked: 16
Upgraded: 15
Checked in: 13
I was #2 on the upgrade list ^ but thought I still had a decent shot, so instead of visiting the PC I decided to go straight away to observe the theater that is the pre-flight gate area. With BlackBerry in hand I checked the PDA site. The gate attendants were busy working their terminals and clearing the econ standby customers. Each time they called someone I checked the PDA site and could see the standby list and seat map changes real time.
At T-30 minutes the F upgrade list still showed Checked-in at 13. I had a good feeling that those reservations would be cancelled shortly so I did not join the scrum that is the general boarding process @:-) instead choosing to stay put, checking the PDA upgrade list every minute or two. Everyone else boarded when I noticed I had cleared, so I proceeded to the podium:
SL: Hi I think my upgrade just cleared.
GA: Are you SunLover?
SL: Yes ma'am. Thank you for working the upgrade list so hard. ^
GA: I was just checking to see if you had boarded the plane.
SL: I was waiting, and watching my upgrade status on the BlackBerry.
GA: It’s pretty cool that you guys can see what we are doing up here.
SL: It certainly is convenient. Thanks again.
This was a good gate crew (not really expecting the A team on a holiday weekend) so they would have probably gone and got me from Y; but there have been many reports where the GA’s have not done this, so I wanted to make it easy for them...

Hey SunLover-
Been trying to get this to work for UA flights on pda.continental.com. I can't seem to access the upgrade list option (even though i make sure to select that radio button before hitting Go).. it just shows the flight status page. Is my iphone crazy?

The one thing the CO iPhone (and presumably Android) app can do for PMUA fliers is show flight status - if you search for a CO flight number, the flight status screen will have a link for the UA flight number ("Were you looking for UAXXXX?"). With luck, once the IT departments get their collective act together, the CO app becomes the app for the combined airline - for what it does, it works very well.
