I actually never understood the point of them selling wines. The restaurants seem to be geared more toward having a quick meal in something a little nicer than a McDonald's but more relaxed than a full on restaurant.

I think they probably sell wines to boost the image a little bit - to give their sites a slight lift above the dodgy chicken-n-chips places abound in London. Probably doesn't hurt their margins any, either.

I also think that (from what I've personally witnessed) Nando's is a nice meal out on a Saturday night for a significant, less-affluent market. This is the type of market which, I suppose, might buy a glass of wine to treat themselves and to feel a little posh (I hope that doesn't come across as condescending) but isn't as discerning about the quality of the wine consumed as the silver palates of other posters above. ;)

But Nando's isn't THAT cheap, either. Not totally sure about current pricing in London (I've been dodging it for quite some time), but in places like Leeds, chain pubs are cheaper, and usually do have some half-decent Pinot Grigio/Rioja available.

Asmara is great - definitely worth a go.

From the handful of Potruguese places I've been to around Stockwell, a couple were great, but I don't recall details :confused: - will check with Mrs Sofasurfer and see if she can help out!

Personally, I'd go for Asmara over the Stockwell options.
