If you don't want to be seriously ripped off for a pint of Guinness (other stouts are available) then you need to seek out pubs just off the beaten track - and it really doesn't have to be far.

Last time I was there at the end of 2025 I went to Nanny O'Sheas on Mountjoy Street - very close to Parnell Square. It's a locals pub with a few characters at the bar, but very welcoming. Guinness was around €6 a pint, right at the bottom end for the area and if you want a different stout they also sell Beamish.

You know you're going to get rinsed in some (most) (all) of the bars in Temple Bar but, so long as you go in with your eyes open, it is definitely somewhere to have a wander round and enjoy.

Sometimes the tourist traps are popular because they're worth going to as a tourist. I very much include Gogarty's in that.

The music is pretty good but, obviously, earlier on in the evenings they play stuff that the tourists will have heard. Later on, less so. Last time I was in it wasn't quite ooh aah up the 'ra, but it wasn't far short by midnight.

Full disclosure: Mrs Troll went to uni with a few of the lads who play in there.
