Need some suggestions...
 

guys,
on my return from india, i have a 10 hr 5 min. layover in London. I'd like to go and spend some of those hours shopping and seeing the city for a little bit. I've heard that the tube is the best way to get to the city; however I need some advice as to where I can go shopping. my sisters have already asked me something to get from there, and they don't want it something from the airport shops. one sister has asked me to get somethign from the Burberry Store. Other has asked for Chocolates and/or perfume. anyways, could you please give me some information as to where i can purchase such stuff? How I can do all this and still make my flight to USA. I will highly appreciate it a lot. If there are links you can guide me towards, that will also work.

Prices in UK are high -- typically double to triple the US (NYC) price ... which is why Brits fly to JFK to do their shopping. Even for goods made in England it is generally cheaper to buy in the US. As for the LHR stores, one good thing about them is that there is ample selection and prices and quality are identical to high street, so you won't do better by shopping in London unless you know a specific store or item. The Burberry store at LHR is identical to what you will find in London, and may well be cheaper (however, I am sure it is cheaper in New York for genuine Burberry).

Take Piccadilly line from LHR to Knightsbridge - Puts you within reach of a Burberry shop and Harrod's for chocolates and other foods. You can also enjoy a walk in Hyde Park.

As other posters indicate, you might find better prices in NYC than at Burberry in the UK.

There's a Burberry Factory Shop in London - bit of a hike from LHR though

But Burberry in the UK is the brand of the Chav (think better dressed trailer trash)

Well, then it might be Harrods all the way then :) I need to look up on how to get the VAT back as well...

If you spend over 100L in Harrods they will process your VAT refund right there in the store. If it's less than 110L then you mail it in.

A couple of years ago I got a coffee crock at Harrods that is really beautiful, says Harrods on it and resonably priced (in the best way Harrods could possibly be!). I have had it on my counter and use it daily to hold my coffee beans. Just a possible gift idea type of thing.

I'm assuming you'll be travelling light or leaving your bags at the aiport.

In that case i'd take the heathrow express into Paddington, then cab it to where ever you want to go, it will save you a LOT of time compared to the tube....

I would buy no clothes at all in england, a good rule of thumb is that whatever costs a pound here costs a dollar there, including Burberry -which no one in london would ever wear unless they like hanging around car park late at night....

Your best bet is definately the Piccadilly line tube to Knightsbridge. Harrods and Harvey Nichols department stores are on your doorstep, and there is a massive Burberry store inbetween them, on the opposite side of the road.

Thanks a lot. I think this is what I will do. Can I just buy the tickets for the tube at LHR itself? Or do I have to buy them everytime before I get on them??? I was checkign the website of thetube and it said something about a day pass or something. then it talked about zones, which totally got me :confused: ... anyways, i'm looking forward to this trip...

All you need to know really is that LHR is in Zone 6 and Knightsbridge is in Zone 1.

If you are starting your journey after 9.30am (off-peak), your best deal would probably be to buy a one-day travelcard for Zones 1-6 at LHR. Then you can just travel around all day on it without having to buy any more tickets.

Had to bump it because I have another quesiton and didn't feel like starting a new thread for that.
1. Heathrow Express claims that it takes 15 mins from LHR to Paddington.
2. How much travel time am I looking at from LHR to knightsbridge?

I'm thinking I might just take the tube to London, but on my way back to LHR, I'll take the Heathrow Express which will save me time since I will have to take a flight back. Plus I just found a 25% off coupon so I'm tempted to purchase a return trip on the Heathrow Express. But I don't know how close the knightsbridge station is from there or if I can connect to the Jubilee Line to go to London Bridge (where my friend works)...

As i mentioned above I would take the Heathrow Express every time. I think (can someone confirm) that a day return is only a little more then a one way, so would save you money as well as time.

This give the underground time as about 40 mins for LHR to Knightsbridge.

LHR to Knightsbridge using the Heathrow Express for the first section (15 mins) and then tube (18 mins) gives 33mins + change a so probable about 40 mins. I suggest you just get the underground and save your pennies for Harrods.

thank you. I'm just going to take the tube into London, and on the way back to save time I will take the Heathrow Express. I have already booked the one-way fare using the 25% off coupon. and I will just get the day pass of the tube to roam about London. (zone 1-6) Im assuming with that I can travel on any line at any time...
