Good chip shop in Edinburgh please
[note I'm not looking for *the best* chip shop - that's rather toosubjective, and I don't want things to go Pete Tong as in this thread ;) ]
Will be visiting my brother and family in Edinburgh (out near the zoo) in December, and will take the opportunity to eat proper fish and chips for every meal. What are people's favourite chippies ? And I mean proper Edinburgh chippies - I used to live in Auld Reekie but haven't been there for years. In those days, L'Aquila Bianca or L'Alba d'Oro (I think, the one down Henderson Terrace) were always pretty good, but no idea if they're even there any more. Looking for fresh, tasty, crispy fish supper - good pies and haggis get bonus points :D Votes / opinions welcome - even from expatriates :D |
Salt and sauce?
Deep fried Mars bars? You're making me jealous. I need make a trip to Edinburgh again soon. |
50 views and no recommendations ??
Wow - 50 FTers have looked at this thread, and only one person has commented (thanks sapman986), and even that's only adding comment to make me drool ;)
Given how opinionated FTers are on most things, I can only guess that those 50 are all so healthy that they don't frequent chippies   C'mon folks - any opinions welcome. Or even just chip in (arf arf) with your favourite deep-fried food. I have to admit to a liking for the deep-fried pizza in my youth :D For those of you not familiar with it, the traditional Edinburgh chip-shop pizza is a 9" deep frozen mass-produced cheese and tomato, flamboyantly frisbee'd into the fryer, then folded when cooked to fit neatly on top of your chips :D :D I never got into Mars bars.... |
you've already got my recommendation - L'Alba D'oro. Used to be just across the road from my student flat, and many a time we would pop across for a bag of chips and/or some ice cream. It was still there 6 months ago...
In the three years I was at uni there, they never sold the bottle of alcohol (I can't remember if it was port or champagne or brandy) they had on sale at £200  Deep fried scotch pie or macaroni pie takes a lot of beating ;) But now I know what scotch pies are made from, I usually go haggis pudding supper :D (I know, there is a logical fallacy in that position, but I'm ignoring it!) |
I can certainly recommend Stockbridge's finest, L'Aquila Bianca
|
Now my tastebuds are going - for a whitepudding supper please!
Not in Edinburgh proper, but if you get out of the city, the chippy across from 'the best toilets in the UK' in North Berwick does good fish and chips, as well as a nice white pudding supper.... |

I'm sorry that i dont know any places in Edinburgh.
I did visit Scotland in the 80's and was taken to a beach resort area near Cullean(sic?) castle. I was taken to a little shop on the beach and had what was the best fish I had ever tasted. It actually was a filet right of the side of a fish and even had a little piece of tail on it. Served with chips in a newspaper. To this day I have not had a piece of fish that tasted as fresh as that one did. Thats reason enough to go back to Scotland :D |
out near the zoo, the Monte Bianco on Western Corner might be the best bet. I used to live around there, and it was the best in the area. BTW if you are at/near the zoo, keep an eye out for me every Saturday morning - I'm the one being dragged to see the penguins by an excited two year old. I'd quite happily deep fry one of those and I'm not even Scottish.

That's just cruel - penguins are sweet and it's not their fault... ;) |

May well see you on Saturday morning - my 3 year old nephew has a season ticket to the zoo and I think that his parents have already volunteered me for zoo-going duties ;) |
