I appreciate all the advice and hope this is helpful for others as well. For this post I was looking for the small shop kinda thing. Probably does brisk takeaway and probably doesn't have table service.

I have found for the more upscale dinners I can often combine zagat, time out and concierge and get a good "feel" for what we are looking for.

PS - Sheekey actually "edges out its siblings, The Ivy and Le Caprice" according to zagat.

North Sea Fish is small but does have tables. Neighborhood sort of place. Bar in the back as I recall, sort of a Britsh bar and grill thing.

Have fun! Hope the weather is good for you.

The Wilton Arms in Belgravia is my favorite neighborhood pub with good grub. You've got to have mushy peas with your fish & chips!

We went to:
Rock & Sole Plaice
47 Endell Street, WC2H 9AJ
020 7836 3785

Perfect exactly what we wanted. Spot on, as you say.

We also went to Preem on Brick Lane (Indian) very good and the Pub in the Old Bank of England Building on Fleet Street just inside the City limits. Very good meat pie cooked iwith a beer gravy and mushrooms. I wish I was eating that now and not leftovers http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/frown.gif

Ah, and did you see the sign on the outside telling the story of Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street, and what he and Mrs Lovett the pie-maker did with the bodies? http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...um/biggrin.gif

Actually we did. The same sign or something similar is posted midway up the stairs inside. the owners assure us that none of that goes on now - or at least let's hope http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif

What is the name of that pub? Do you know - i want to pass it on to a friend - it was very good.

Globaliser Jan 22, 2004 11:59 am

That's exactly what it is called - "The Old Bank of England".

I've never been sure whether the Bank was ever on that site. Did the pub have any accurate information about it?

On this and the other tip, went to Rock & Sole Plaice Saturday night and was sorely, sorely disappointed . . . either it has gone severely downhill, or I have different fish standards than others (I'm a southern boy who knows his way around a fish fillet and a vat of hot grease).

I'm also a London first-timer who was looking forward to the haddock. It was passable if a bit on the expensive side, but the flavor was rather bland, it needed the assistance of the sauce. Not like the fish I can cook, and not as good as the standard fish-and-chips I get at States restaurants. But the worst part was the chips -- flaccid lukewarm tasteless lumps of potato, not even salvageable by ketchup.

I'll try again for a better place.

We did Fryer's Delight once when we stayed at a hotel near the Holborn Tube and we really liked their haddock. It was very good and satisfying. Here is the address and such:

Fryer's Delight
19 Theobalds Rd (E of Lambs Conduit St)
12p-10p, 5£

I will reiterate my suggestion of North Sea Fish Restaurant. Also in the interim I have been at J. Sheeky and it was outstanding. And at either, if Im wrong you can always buy enough whisky that you wouldnt care. ;)

I have eaten at the Rock & Roll Plaice a number of times over the years and IMHO it's a shade of what it used to be when it was just a great neighborhood takeaway place. On the positive side, the wall to wall ocean themed murals downstairs are nicely painted in lovely shades of blue and are very pleasant to look at... The two unisex toilets are clean and well stocked. The West End billboards on the upstairs walls are usually current, so are clean. The prices are a bit steep for Yanks, based on what's served... One piece of cod w/chips is £8.99, or about $17.30... Add a fish cake, a cuppa tea and a decent tip, and the out-of-pocket for one regular sized meal is over $25! I remember when I could get takeaway for 4 here for £10! I have eaten here as recently as last week, so I do report based upon recent experience...

The location is easy to find. If you're standing outside the front door entrance of the Opera House, 2 blocks to the left is Endell Street. Make a right on Endell just past the Magistrate's Court and walk about 2 more blocks.

It's definetly not a chippie and located in the City, but does anybody have opinions & comments on Sweetings for fried fish? I'm thinking of inviting a friend working in the neighbourhood and some family for Friday lunch. Is it very packed on Fridays and do they kick you out if you linger too long over your wine? ;)
