For this post I was looking for the small shop kinda thing. Probably does brisk takeaway and probably doesn't have table service. I have found for the more upscale dinners I can often combine zagat, time out and concierge and get a good "feel" for what we are looking for. PS - Sheekey actually "edges out its siblings, The Ivy and Le Caprice" according to zagat.</font> Have fun! Hope the weather is good for you. |
The Wilton Arms in Belgravia is my favorite neighborhood pub with good grub. You've got to have mushy peas with your fish & chips!

We went to:
Rock & Sole Plaice 47 Endell Street, WC2H 9AJ 020 7836 3785 Perfect exactly what we wanted. Spot on, as you say. We also went to Preem on Brick Lane (Indian) very good and the Pub in the Old Bank of England Building on Fleet Street just inside the City limits. Very good meat pie cooked iwith a beer gravy and mushrooms. I wish I was eating that now and not leftovers http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/frown.gif |

That's exactly what it is called - "The Old Bank of England".
I've never been sure whether the Bank was ever on that site. Did the pub have any accurate information about it? |

(Also, re your other thread about traffic in the dining section, rest assured that a few of us do check into the forum regularly... http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif) On this and the other tip, went to Rock & Sole Plaice Saturday night and was sorely, sorely disappointed . . . either it has gone severely downhill, or I have different fish standards than others (I'm a southern boy who knows his way around a fish fillet and a vat of hot grease). I'm also a London first-timer who was looking forward to the haddock. It was passable if a bit on the expensive side, but the flavor was rather bland, it needed the assistance of the sauce. Not like the fish I can cook, and not as good as the standard fish-and-chips I get at States restaurants. But the worst part was the chips -- flaccid lukewarm tasteless lumps of potato, not even salvageable by ketchup. I'll try again for a better place. |

Rock & Sole Plaice 47 Endell Street, WC2H 9AJ 020 7836 3785 The location is easy to find. If you're standing outside the front door entrance of the Opera House, 2 blocks to the left is Endell Street. Make a right on Endell just past the Magistrate's Court and walk about 2 more blocks. |
It's definetly not a chippie and located in the City, but does anybody have opinions & comments on Sweetings for fried fish? I'm thinking of inviting a friend working in the neighbourhood and some family for Friday lunch. Is it very packed on Fridays and do they kick you out if you linger too long over your wine? ;)
