Favourite hotel in Edinburgh??

Mrs T. and I will be spending 2 or 3 nights in EDI towards the end of June and have been looking at the various travel websites for hotels. Honestly, not much has appealed so far - even the pricier ones seem to be a little tired or showing 1970's style decor. So I thought I'd ask the experts to see if there were any suggestions out there. Happy to spend up to $350-400 Cdn a night but less is ok too! Your pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Would you want a chain hotel and if so do you have any status or points?

Ł250 a night. Kimpton Charlotte Square? Doubletree Edinburgh City Centre?

if the dates are weekends then rates can be very high. Lots and lots of demand!

I like Hotel Indigo on Princess Street, perfect location, modern but not too modern decor, and it should be well below your budget

Have a look at Premier inn. It's a basic no frills hotel chain but perfectly comfortable with good locations in Edinburgh.

If you're just looking for a bed without any fancy surroundings, I'd suggest trying Premier Inn. I've used them in other parts of the UK and are generally fine. I did a quick search (23rd-25th) and found this place slap bang in the middle of the Old Town for Ł223 in total for 2 people:

As a tip, most things you'll want to see will be in the city centre and walkable. So I'd suggest against staying further out of the city centre for cheaper accommodation, as it'll be a false economy once you add up the loss of time in travelling given the short length of time you'll be staying in the city.

Prefer against a chain - kinda looking for a bit of local charm and no status in life period!

Glasshouse is very nice. Part of the Marriott group, but not a "box" type hotel.

Love EDI. Have stayed at numerous places there from big names to boutique.

For what you're looking for, check out Eden Locke, Nira Caledonia, Le Monde. Prices maybe a bit higher for summer.

I also vote for Kimpton, Glasshouse.

Thanx for all the input Everyone! Further searching has produced the Nira and the 21212 Restaurant with Rooms - both of which appeal. EDI surely gets pricey in the summer eh?

We stayed at the Nira about 5 years back. It was a bit underwhelming. The room was probably the smallest I've ever had at any hotel! It was difficult to get to the toilet from one side of the bed...

I take it you've never stayed at a Citizen M?

(I love Citizen M, by the way, but only if travelling solo.)

Actually I have I'd forgotten about CitizenM... but the Nira wasn't much bigger! At least with CitizenM I know what I'm going to get, and I love the whole concept.
