Crossrail

I'm trying to find out if Crossrail between Farringdon and Heathrow will be open by December. If it is, it makes Heathrow much more accessible and I can ditch expensive taxis.

Does anyone know?

OPENING THE ELIZABETH LINE
The Elizabeth line is the most significant addition to London’s transport network in a generation. The new railway will transform life and travel in London and the South East, reduce journey times, create additional capacity, transform accessibility and provide a huge economic boost.

In the first half of 2022, the Elizabeth line will launch with passenger services between Paddington and Abbey Wood. With 12 trains per hour running all day, this will bring immediate benefits to passengers. Services from Reading and Heathrow to Paddington mainline, and from Shenfield to Liverpool Street mainline will be rebranded from TfL Rail to the Elizabeth line.
<snip>
Direct services from Reading, Heathrow and Shenfield are expected to connect with the central section in autumn 2022, with full end to end services commencing no later than May 2023. The opening of the Elizabeth line has always been planned to take place in stages to ensure the new section stations, signalling and infrastructure can run safely and reliably before it fully links in with services out to the east and west

Between now and December maaaaany things can happen. What I'd recommend, closer to the date, is to check the TfL website for potential closures. If it's a festivity, or a weekend, TfL has the bad habit of shutting down parts of its network for works. This year over Xmas there was no Piccadilly Line to LHR, and same will happen on Easter.

Based on our Mayor's wonderful record, there is more chance of Spurs winning the treble.

Does the Mayor have anything to do with detailed design & construction? Is the TBM driver?

They do it over bank holidays because it dosen't affect many commuters and because there are fewer other passengers. What solution do you have to allow extensive engineering works to take place?

And a huge chunk of the national rail network is closed or affected by engineering works as well.

Crossrail = TfL-owned construction company which has now passed ownership of the network back to TfL.

Chairman of TfL = the Mayor of London.

So I think it's pretty fair to state that the Mayor has some sort of responsibility when it comes to delivery.

"I'm trying to find out if Crossrail between Farringdon and Heathrow will be open by December."
We would all love to know! After a dreadful debacle of a missed opening date, the project team are refusing to commit to a specific opening date until they are 100% sure. But all the feedback on specialist railway sites is that it is almost ready to open. There are many reasons to suspect the third week of May, as that aligns with a major change date in the national rail timetable.
Note that the initial opening will have trains running through the core as far as Paddington (Low level). You'll need to change there to the main Paddington station for trains to Heathrow.
I think you can be almost guaranteed that the network will be open in December - but you cannot be sure that there will be through trains from Farriingdon to Heathrow.

99% Crossrail will be open
90% chance of direct trains from Heathrow by that point - the plan is for that to happen “in the Autumn”

Let’s not forget who was Mayor when many of the issues with construction actually took place due to the bonkers approach to contracting. And it wasn’t the current Mayor 😉

Well, night-time would be a good place to start. Or whatever other cities do, for I don't see that many other "world-class" cities closing a solid chunk of their network every weekend. London isn't a village, people work and travel throughout the week.

How much work do you think can get done in 3 or 4 hours work on a night? The answer is not a lot. And it costs an arm and a leg. And other than replacing short stretches of track you can't get a lot of intensive replacement work done in that short period time.

You should see for example how many service changes New York has over a weekend because of engineering works.

How often do Paris/Hong Kong/Tokyo/Madrid close down parts of the service on weekends?

The OP asked whether Crossrail would be open, I suggested he checks TfL for closures - for they are a common occurrence. I don't think it's unfair to be saying that. Then, if we want to go for a full comparison between TfL and other big cities' mass transit I suppose we could, though OT... I just don't think it'd bode well for TfL in my opinion.

Fab. i would love to be able to take public transport to Heathrow just to dodge the M25 as well as taking in the environmental considerations.
