Any experience since landing cards not needed at LHR

My husband will be traveling unaccompanied to LHR, with a wheelchair service requested at destination. Does the no landing card mean you just use Electronic US passport?

I came through LHR yesterday and with a US passport and UK residence permit they still waved me through the e-gates, no landing card necessary. The machines are similar to the US ones - slide the passport with your photo page face down, look at a spot, and then the door will open.
